I had this same problem upgrading to a WD Green 6TB. Here was my scenario. If it's close to yours then it should work. 1. Used iPhone "AirPort Utility" app to try the repair. No luck. Tried removing/reseating about 6 times. I thought I wasted $200. 2. Installed Windows "AirPort Utility 5.5.3 for Windows" Apple Website 3. Performed Repair Disk. Bingo. Done. Enjoy. Honestly I can't remember if the button is Repair or Delete or even something else. But you only have one option...
I have mine open right now so I can easily tell you in about 4 hours when I get home. BTW, the connector lifts out perpendicular to the logic board, unlike the million others that look exactly like it which pull out horizontally.
