Hello, my name is Sebastian Dow. I am a first year civil engineering major studying at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. I chose this major because after college I would like to work for an engineering firm that designs infrastructure in an environmentally conscious and sustainable way.

I have interned at two wastewater treatment plants in Marin County, California, where I worked alongside laboratory technicians and civil engineers. During these internships, I learned about design processes and how a real world project is carried out. I spent most of my time working with civil engineers to design retaining walls that would prevent landslides on the hill next to one of the treatment plants. I also performed quality control tests of wastewater samples in a lab on a daily basis.

Over the course of my life I have grown to appreciate the power of working with a team. As an Eagle Scout, I have mastered the attributes required to be a team leader while also being a dynamic team member. In my senior year of high school, I was chosen to work with a select group of individuals on the construction of a Vans RV-12 lightweight aircraft. My active communication and leadership skills enabled my team to be extremely successful in this accelerated project

During my sophomore and junior years of high school I planned, designed, and sought funding to build an outdoor classroom for my high school science department. My design included materials with a low carbon footprint and I chose all the materials from local sources on a limited budget. This hands-on learning experience of the design and build process prepared me for sustainable, project-based work that I look forward to in my future.
