Introduction

Picture of URI campus.

Hello! My name is Julia Vieira and I am a senior at the University of Rhode Island.

At URI I am majoring in Environmental Science and Management. I am currently working as a research assistant in Dr. Steven Alm’s entomology lab.

Research Experience

This summer I had the opportunity of working with Dr. Alm through URI’s Coastal and Environmental Fellowship where we completed the 2020 Rhode Island Bumble bee (Bombus spp.) Survey. I assisted a graduate student in gathering the state’s first comprehensive inventory of Bombus spp. foraging resources that can be used to make improved pollinator habitat recommendations to landowners in Rhode Island.

I also assisted another graduate student in her research regarding the control of Varroa destructor in honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies. We experimented with using novel sugar treatments to reduce Varroa mite populations in honey bee hives.

Since then, I have been running petri dish assays to test the mortality of different acids on sawtooth grain beetles and wax worm larvae. We are hoping to learn the mode of action of these acids on different insects and potentially test them as another control for Varroa mites.

Aspirations

My experience this summer has inspired me to work towards a career in pollinator conservation. I plan on attending graduate school to do expand current research on bumble bee vision and further our understanding of the relationship between bumble bees and their floral preferences.

In the meantime, I will continue to work for Dr. Steven Alm in his entomology lab. We are currently designing artificial domiciles to be placed in the early spring in the hopes of providing suitable nesting sites for new queens.
