Thank you for this guide - can’t believe how easy it was to add the second drive with these instructions. I’m a fairly experienced PC builder, but without this guide, I don’t think I’d have managed to get this done on the Mini. It’s amazing how much they’ve packed into the case!
Two things I found tricky:
1. Getting the top hard drive to screw back in. I ended up using the spudger to just lift up the top drive enough to get the first screw to catch, then pulled the spudger out.
2. The fan plug didn’t seat properly into the socket, on reassembly. My Mini has always run very quiet and so I’m glad I left the cover off when I turned it back on first time. A quick wiggle on the plug and the fan burst into life.
I used the cheaper kit from Amazon (iFixit was out of stock in EU) and it seems to have worked just fine. SSD on the bottom, original HDD on the top.
One other thing - my 2012 Mini wouldn’t take Catalina as an upgrade to Mountain Lion that it semi-automatically installed when I turned it on. I had to install El Capitan on top of Mountain Lion, and then Catalina on top of that.
