My replacement Touch screen came in and I opted for one with every part including a new home button installed. For a few dollars extra I feel it is worth it as compared to installing your old Home button and tiny ribbon click cable. However the new one came with one half of the tiny ribbon cable loose. What is that all about? I have to bend it into a u shape and tape it down to get the home button to work. Not sure why it did not come already taped down with that yellow tape. Anyone know why??

I would suggest another computer also. Mine was stuck in the one color screen mode after attempting to remove 4.0 due to many issues. I put it on another computer using the hold both buttons and then let go of home button awhile after plugging into a computer and it came out of the hung state. It still has 4.0 on it but now most of my apps have been updated to work with 4.0 which helps

Marcus, Thanks for the instructions on how to install a wifi cable on the 2nd Gen iPod. I am sure others will find this helpful. I have since put my iPod back together again as I could not get an answer on how to attach the wifi cable and was concerned that my iPod would end up in worse shape sitting around as parts. I still would like to know where to buy: 1. Double sided tape - I got some at a craft store and already it is coming loose between the touch screen and the frame - I think it can't handle temp above 90 degrees. So what is a good source? 2. Conductive tape like what is on the wifi cable in the URL I posted. Is the tape that I asked about in the other URL going to work or can someone suggest a better source? - I just don't want to guess at what tape to use. 3. Will the conductive tape in 2 above also work for the grounding of the sleep/wake button ribbon cable on the 1st Gen iPod?

I pulled the unit apart after purchasing a wifi cable online. But it looks like I can not use the wifi cable I bought because one end of the cable looks like it needs very expensive surface mounting equipment to attach the ribbon to the iPod mother board. Also the new ribbon cable did not come with any stick down tape. The existing cable has come loose on one section. I flipped it over far enough so that I could see that Apple has used a copper impregnated tape to stick the copper land on the bottom of the wifi cable to the metal back case of the iPod. This copper impregnated tape has lost its capability to stick. I think that lack of conductivity to the back plane "ground Plane" is causing the loss in my wifi signal. Is this electrically conductive tape available from this site? Or does someone know where I can buy some in small quantities? I don't know what Chip you guys think you can buy if it is a "Chip" as the wifi circuit is surface mounted to the main board. There is a separate wifi cable you can buy that has circuitry on one end but I do not think the cable can be installed without expensive surface mount equipment.

Can you see Wifi in the Settings or is it grayed out? I bought a replacement wifi cable thinking it may solve my decreased signal strength. But I am disappointed to find that one side of the cable appears to be attached directly to the circuit board and there is no connector. Maybe someone else knows how it is connected but to me it looks like it was done with a very expensive machine that has to place it exactly in one location to make all the very small tabs line up. There is a small ribbon cable section that goes off parallel to the main cable that connects to the volume control but I don't think this slide connector being loose would impact the wifi. There is also a small cable that does not come with the replacement wifi cable and is seen in step 10 of the tear down and the letters CE are just below the ribbon. I have no idea how this small ribbon is attached to the wifi cable. If you have very limited connectivity it may be that the ribbon cable has pulled loose from the back of the iPod case. In...

I agree, You can not glue it. Maybe if you found some conductive glue but I still do not think it would work in this area.

In other post I read that there is a inverter section on the main logic board that drives the back light on the LCD. If the inverter is bad replacing the LCD will not fix the backlight problem. That said it still could be a bad ground or dirty contact causing the issue.

I have the same issue. Some hardware suggestions would be nice. I do not want to have to toss this device in the land fill :) Oh and regarding doing the reset since the screen is super dim it would help to have a working iPod next to you so you could run through the steps on the good one to help you know what to select on the broken one. And even after you select "Reset All Settings" there is still another RED "Reset All Settings / Cancel " that you have to select Reset All Settings or Cancel. Good Luck.

I had to take mine apart again due to Home Button issues. The touch screen had come loose from the plastic bezel causing the home button to work incorrectly. In the process of trying to clean up old glue I broke the ribbon cable on the brand new only been used for a coupe of months touch screen. I ended up taking the screen all the way off and was left with popping out the plastic bezel without breaking it. I thought it would be difficult but with the touch screen already out of the way I got the plastic bezel off in under 20 minutes.

So what is the orientation for the putting the home button back in. The button has two tabs. Do the tabs face vertical or horizontal? What keeps the button from rotating? Do the tabs fit into slots?

What indication did you have that the plastic protectors were still on the new screens? Did parts fit too tightly? Was the screen Dim?

Just curious as this may be some issues others are experiencing.

1. What is it for? The LCD appears to be a closed unit so I do not think it is for lighting the LCD. Is it a reflector for the Wifi or Blue Tooth?

2. Which way is it suppose to face. Shiny side up or shiny side down? In the pic above it is shiny side up but I see on my replacement LCD it is stuck on shiny side down.

Thanks to anyone with any suggestions about why the home button sticks in the unit but not when it is out of the unit.

Last night I recalled I use to own a metal pic it was a thumb pic for slide guitar. Anyway I decided to use my metal tools I bought from this site which are more rounded edges than the flat bladed screw driver that comes with kits. I made more progress with the metal tools and got what I think is all sides mostly up accept for the home button side which is really fighting me. I can easily tell where a clip is by sliding the tool alongside until I bump up against the side of a clip but I find it very difficult to push straight down to catch the top of the clip which it would seem would push away from the bezel. I am just not sure why this is difficult to do. I have a broken 2nd gen which I use as reference and it looks like the clip would easily push away. At any rate I am in the same predicament as you. I got the 2nd gen together only to find the home button sticks and wifi range is not what it use to be. So I am attempting to take the iPod apart a 2nd time to fix these issues without breaking the touch screen and lcd and so am taking my time. I just don't want to have to replace these brand new parts and have more money in this 8 gig 2nd gen than if I had just bought a brand new one.

I am not familiar with a Metal Guitar pick, The plastic ones break very easily. (Even my Fender one) Did your metal pick damage the metal frame of your iPod? Were you able to remove the touch screen, o-ring, and plastic bezel without further damage to the parts?

When I attempted to use a metal screwdriver I damaged the LCD.

Update: I have been told that basically all I have accomplished is to raise the glass up above the surface of the metal case and really have not even got to the plastic bezel and disconnecting the clips. So maybe I have got no where so far.
