Inspect the Tip: Clean or Replace?

  • Oxidized soldering tips can be revived and serve you for years to come, but the first step is to evaluate your tip's condition to determine if it needs cleaning or replacement.

  • While the iron is cool, inspect the working area.

  • The "working area" is the layer of exposed iron/nickel at the very end of a soldering iron tip. All soldering is completed with the working area.

  • Bits of oxidation (rust), charred buildup, or superficial scratches (as shown in the first photo) on the working area happen with normal use and can be addressed with this guide.

  • If you notice pits, holes, cracks, deformations, exposed copper, or other signs of physical damage (as shown in photos two and three), save yourself the headache and just replace the tip.

  • For a closer look, use a magnifying glass.

Spitze überprüfen: Reinigung oder Ersatz?

Oxidierte Lötspitzen können für weitere Jahre wieder in Schuss gebracht werden, zuerst musst du aber feststellen ob die Lötspitze gereinigt werden kann, oder ob sie ersetzt werden muss.

Untersuche die lötaktive Zone an der Spitze, der Lötkolben muss dazu abgekühlt sein.

Die "lötaktive Zone" ist der mit Eisen/Nickel beschichtete Bereich ganz an der Spitze. Der eigentliche Lötvorgang findet hier statt.

Oxidationsspuren (Rost), verkohlte Ablagerungen oder oberflächliche Kratzer (wie auf dem ersten Foto zu sehen) auf der lötaktiven Zone kommen bei normalem Gebrauch vor und können mit Hilfe dieser Anleitung beseitigt werden.

Wenn du Kerben, Löcher, Risse, Verformungen, freiliegendes Kupfer oder andere Anzeichen für physische Schäden (wie auf den Fotos zwei und drei zu sehen) feststellst, erspare dir die Kopfschmerzen und ersetze die Spitze einfach.

Benutze ein Vergrößerungsglas, um die Fehler besser beurteilen zu können.
