Help repairing power supply PCB

Hi,

I have an early 2005 G5 Power Mac (dual 2.7 liquid cooled) and the PSU blew up.

This is not due to the common liquid leakage that occured to a lot of Power Macs of this age.

The PSU is an ACBEL API2FS34 (Mac Part Num: 614-0306) 600W PSU.

I have stripped down the PSU and have isolated the component that has failed (a little orange disc on the 240VAC side of the PCB. It is labeled as 'MOV2' on the silk screening. MOV1 is different dimensions and neither have any identifying marks as to what they are.

This is the only component that has failed (all elec caps are fine with no bulging).

If anyone can identify what this component is it would be greatly appreciated!

MOV - a varistor to protect the other components.

when you say failed - does it present a 'short'?

If it is really the only faulty component (could be dameged by a voltage spike, like lightning strike) just removing it should allow the PSU to work again. good for testing

You could say that its shorted - its completely blown apart. The fuses have blown too, which i neglected to mention - sorry.

So leaving this part out of the PSU will not harm it?

Spikey2 - thanks a lot for your help! A $1.95 275VAC 2500A D10MM MOV from Jaycar (part number RN3406) was the part I required. 10 minutes later we have the G5 up and running again.

For anyone else doing this repair - your fuses will be blown too so I recommend getting a pack of M205 PCB fuse holders and a few fuses that are rated the same as the solder in fuses. It just makes it that little bit easier if you get blown fuses again in the future.

I have a powermac g5 dual 2.7 it starts up with no led light, no chime sound, monitors not working. about 2 minutes the fans starts to race like it is about to take off like a airplane. did you have any of these same problems that lead you the power supply being the problem ?

Hi Mikido.

I am unaware of such issues. I was out on a film set when our G5 broke. All I was told when I got back into the office was 'it won't start, merry xmas'.

Would be worth starting your own thread as this one is nearly a year old and considered 'answered'.

I know this is a very old question, but is there any chance you have any pictures of the PCB inside the power supply? I am specifically looking for one trace that seems to go from a resistor (near the power plug) and down the length of one side to another component.....water from the LCS got in and burnt one of the traces and I'm going to attempt reconnecting that trace with a short piece of wire.

You're help would be GREATLY appreciated!
