Does anyone know where this small piece belongs?

My wife dropped an iPhone 4s which I opened. I found a small piece hanging lose, near the top of the battery.

Front side view

Back side view

I followed the "dismantle" guide, but I could not find a spot where this piece belongs to, and I could also not see it on any of the pictures. Appreciate your help.

It seems to be made of metal, it looks like a small mirror. I could imagine it is part of a button, a microphone, or a speaker. It could also be some sort of reflector for the camera or the flash.

Your help is greatly appreciated, if you could tell me where this piece belongs to, and maybe a link to a guide of how to mount it correctly.

Thanks a lot.

So I assembled it again, and front+back camera, power button, home button, volume +/-, mute switch all are working.

However, it is getting terribly hot when connecting to the dock connector...

Any suggestions of what should I do?

Thanks.

Either the power button or the volume buttons. I've seen an extra small part or two floating around inside factory sealed iPhones before, so its not unheard of. Its also possible your friend had the power button replaced (common issue on 4S) and the tech dropped the old piece in the process.

As for it getting hot, you likely have a short somewhere. Check and make sure you don't have any loose screws or metal floating around. You might also try taking out the main (rear) camera and seeing if it still gets hot.

Thanks. Indeed, we had this repaired before, and the repair guy did not appear to have done a good job, as he left out some parts (3 screws, 2 metal cover, the small isolation tape at back camera, and the flash sealing ring). Will look for some shorting issue. Thanks again.

Brad was thinking the same thing myself. Power button was my first guess but not sure.

Andre is every thing going ok in the iPhone like all buttons?

The phone is disassembled right now. All buttons make the typical click sound, but I will take a closer look at them (means disassemble the parts), maybe I can see something.

Thanks for your comments. Seems like I may have to assemble it and see whether something is not working.

That is the major component of a button, either one of the volume buttons or the power button. My guess is the power button. The iPhone buttons are made like a clam-shell, this is the upper, side that is pushed of the button. It is just a simple sheet of Kaptan tape (sticker) and a small saucer of metal, which is the click when it is pressed and inverts. As it inverts it contacts the other side of the clam-shell, the contact completes the circuit and the button response is sent to the logic board.

It looks like a volume button to me. Check whether the volume buttons are working fine or not.

The volume buttons are identical to the power button. How could you determine it is one or the other from the photos?
