Speaker / Headphone switching not working

I have just replaced the usb dock and the sound is no longer directed to the headphones when inserted. The only way I can overcome this is by using an App called Sound About

Can anyone help me to get it to work properly please?

PS, Can anyone explain how the switching is achieved when inserting/removing the headphone jack?

I assume it must trigger a software switch.
