Why is my laptop screen shutting off after a few seconds?

Well to start out i bought this Compaq Presario C300 without the charger i got a charger and powered it up but every time i boot it up the LCD says on for about a few seconds then goes completely black, i tried hooking up an external monitor and it works just fine so m question is why is it doing this only on that LCD?
