Horizontal lines across laptop screen...

I had my brand new, custom Macbook Air for about 8 months when a 1 pixel horizontal line randomly appeared across the screen. Another week later, 2 more appeared. Now, a few years later there are 6 lines! Tried resetting PRAM, no luck... Any other ideas on how to fix this issue without actually buying a whole new screen?

p.s. Separate frustration... I live overseas and called Apple Care the moment the first line appeared early 2014. They assured me that when I returned to the US, they would fix it free of charge, as I was within the 1 year warranty. I told them my travel dates were just beyond the year mark but they said the call had been logged and the "call date" would be honored at time of service. However, when I visited the Genius Bar they refused, saying the warranty was a few weeks overdue and I would need to pay upwards of $300 to have the screen fixed. Just what I was afraid of! My earlier precautions and subsequent explanations did no good with their customer service. So frustrating! Apple is usually so good about these things. It's a BRAND NEW expensive laptop, in perfect working condition with no other issues. The guy took my machine apart and confirmed nothing was wrong internally. I've read other forums where this is a common issue with the MacBook Airs... I tried every angle with Apple so now trying here to see if anyone has had some other creative solve.

Thanks for listening :)

Sadly, Apple is a big company now so things like this do happen. This gets into getting something in writing from the person who you spoke with. While the person on the line may believe you would be covered they won't be there to make it happen. If you still have the case number look online to see what it says if you can get your hands on it you may have the golden ticket to get if fixed depending on what the person wrote. In any case push the issue up the food chain! The more documentation you have the more likely it will be covered. Good Luck!

What apple said sound like it was pretty much correct, this is (was) covered under warranty (4 year warranty with apple care), the only solution I have is to buy and install a new display, there may be some other solution but not that I know of. Good luck!

Thank you Brad! Should have bought that Apple Care after all... Appreciate your help! p.s. Is the new display installation for MacBook Airs fairly straight-forward? I might order it online and replace it myself... I've handled several iPhone screen replacements so would be confident taking it apart and putting it together.

It is a fairly straight forward repair no glue or any prying involved, just screws and cables, you can buy the part for around $300 on eBay or amazon, I would recommend doing it that way.

Hey brother I'm sorry apple would treat you like that, its a sad story but happens regularly

I have see this before and it is not an easy fix to be honest, the connection to the back of the LCD sounds like it is loose

Let me ask, when you open and close the lid do the lines change or disappear, and if you tap the back of the screen will the lines change or disappear? If so that is what is going on, if not it might actually be the LCD going bad but my money is on the connection to the back

What you would have to do since it is an air is take the bezel off which is glued to the screen and then just remove the LCD screws and u can get to the back of it and test the connection, hopefully you can re-seat the connection and it will get rid of the lines

This will test if the LCD is bad or the connection, if you determine that the LCD is bad then you will have it already apart and ready to replace the LCD, I found a few on eBay, used for around 100$ and up, New 200$ and up, if you didnt feel like messing with all the taking apart of the screen you can find whole screen assemblies for around 300$ and up, good luck and hopefully apple with start doing better for their customers...doubt it though...

@Irish - The newer MacBooks use a different signaling system (DisplayPort Vs LVDS) so the loose connection problems don't react this way anymore. More likely the issue is a bad LCD display which could be a manufacturing defect, or a bang or crush damage.

Sadly, no.

But you might be able to do it your self! See if you can find a used system which has a working display or buy the part used. This is not that hard a project to swap out the assembly for someone to do.

It appears to be a common problem with Macs now Iput u[with my vertical blank white credit card wide line but tonight Ianm blessed its a rainbow pattern at the moment plug the MacBook air into another screen and there is no problem. The problem is APPLE itself, they don't care about existing customer just the sales, my screen replacement will cost just over $700 but its an early 2014 build, so the battery may be the next failure, do you know that APPLE don't support their products after 5 years my desktop g5 is an obsolete bit of furniture now my matchbook air is the same solution office work IBM for $500 terabit hb 8 gig ram so if it lasts 2 years i will be laughing all the way go by another one but no more APPLES they don't get viruses only grubs but the update is nearly $2000

so do the maths

Hello everyone:

I tried the SMC resetting and it worked for me when my screen was flickering with much lines. I believe that started when my fan started running and I left it trapped in my glove compartment in my extremely hot car. What a very careless thing to do. Thank Heavenly Father:

Instructions:

1. Shut down the Mac.

2. Plug in the MagSafe or USB-C power adapter to a power source and to your Mac.

3. Using the built-in keyboard, press Shift-Control-Option on the left side of the keyboard, then press the power button at the same time.

4. Release all keys, then press the power button again to turn on your Mac.
