The hard drive needs to be the same brand as the computer was originally shipped with. Is there a way to tell with the number that is available for storage in the "About This Mac". Also once I replace the hard drive where is the information so that I can format the new drive and get it up and running?

Go to Applications> Utlities > Disk Utility and look at the drive.
