The iBook will not open every time the start button is hit. After resting for 6 hours with PS connected, it will open up and is then running perfectly. If then closed down, it will not reopen. A brand new battery did not help.

your HD is going. Boot from install CD/DVD and run Tools -> Disk First Aid, repair disk and repair permissions.

I deserve the noble nickname "stupid".
Of course a new battery should have ample time to charge itself.
It will not happen after just two hours of charging, in my case it went on full capacity after 16 hours of
constant connection to the PS. Sorry for the trouble and thnks to Machead3 for his suggestions which never came to use
