Home button lights up but my screen stays black?

I am trying to learn how to fix smartphones. So I am trying to fix an old one I never threw out. I can charge it and the home button will light up. But the screen stays black. I am assuming I need a new lcd screen. If anyone knows of any good books I can read to help with troubleshooting smartphones would also be appreciated.
