The sender unit may well be the problem but you dont need to pull the bed to replace or repair it . just drop the tank. The sender unit has small connection barbs on it that may get corroded by ethanol based fuels if you clean the connectors this can help.

It is the fuel sending unit you need to pull the bed off and replace it with a new one it will work perfectly then

really you want this guy to pull off the bed to change a sender unit
I would rather pull a bed than a tank any day. At least unbolt the bed and tilt it. Its only six bolts and it goes back on a !&&* of a lot easier than a tank.
Thanks guys I think il cut a door in bed and put hinges since older just in case for later but thanks
My ford ranger is a 93 that some one has installed a 302 with c6 trans has a holly 650 carb the gas guage dosent work .is there any way to fix it
@williamwilkes I don't have an answer for your question off the top of my head, but the engine replacement shouldn't be relevant in this case. The dash gauge is wired to the sender in the fuel tank so neither the engine nor transmission has any effect on the gas gauge.
Cut bed and have trap door for later since old truck

@williamwilkes First thing to do if your gas gauge doesn't work is to figure out where the problem lies; it could be the gauge in the instrument panel or the sender in the fuel tank, or even the wires between them.
On your truck it looks like there is a black wire with a yellow stripe that's the ground for the sender, and a yellow wire with a white stripe that carries the voltage to the gauge in the dash. If you unplug them and short them together, you should see the gauge go from E to F immediately. If it does, you'll want to check the resistance on the sender in the tank to verify you get resistance readings that vary with the fuel level. The best way is to remove the gauge from the tank and clip an ohmmeter on it. Manually move the gauge from one end to the other of its travel while watching the resistance. I don't know the exact readings you should be getting, but generally somewhere around 10-15 ohms in the full position, and something like 75-150 ohms empty. If you don't get readings something like that then you'll need to replace the sender. Here's a page with some general information on diagnosing a malfunctioning fuel gauge.

When my truck is off it reads the amount of fuel it has but when I turn it on it goes to E. What could it be?
