Why is my off switch not working?

The off switch doesn't turn the camera off. However switching it to on turnes it on after it falls asleep.

Ist dies eine gute Frage?

You could try spraying the switch area with DeOxit (take out the battery first.) If some dirt, etc. is in the way of the electrical contacts in the power switch, that might clean it up (it has solved similar problems with other cameras.)

Hi,

Check the Auto Power Off setting in the Power Management settings of your camera.

The default setting is 2 minutes. I think that when you change this setting to OFF that you have to use the off switch to turn it off, otherwise it turns itself off dependant on the setting selected, irrespective of the off switch.

Here is a link to the User Guide,

On the right side of the page click on The Setup Menu, then scroll down to Power Management for a description of Auto Power Off.

The physical switch doesn't work. It won't turn the camera off. I think you misunderstood my question.

Hi,

Did you actually try turning the Auto Power Off setting to 'OFF' and then trying the switch to see if it turns your camera off? Does it turn the camera off then or not?

von

Yep, I sure did.

Hi, Not arguing that it might be the switch, but if it doesn't switch off with the switch then how does it know to turn back on again when you turn the switch back to on. Most movable type switches, as opposed to the non locking press button type, that turn things off actually disconnect the power to the device. If (and I don't know if it is in this case) the power is not disconnected due to a faulty switch then the device stays on. OK it may go into a 'sleep' state due to inactivity but why does it 'wake up' when you turn the switch to on unless you are accidentally pressing the shutter button at the same time perhaps? If the power is still there caused by the switch not removing it when in the off position it should make no difference. Unless of course there is a momentary change caused by the switch being moved which may good enough to do this.

Have you tried the 'reset' option in the setup menu, as this will restore many settings to the factory default position, just to see if it may clear any software 'glitch' that may be the cause? If you do this do not forget to change the auto power off setting to off again before you try and see if it now works.

Other that that I cannot think of what else there is to try. Getting the switch repaired/replaced may hopefully solve it. I wouldn't be surprised though if the problem lay elsewhere.

If I turn auto off off, the switch still doesnt work. 2 min is the shortest auto off time.

Old post I know, but I was able to fix this same issue by blowing real hard into and around the on/off switch. Silly, I was exploring taking the whole thing apart.

I have this issue in my X100 for years now. At first it's just an intermittent problem, camera randomly comes to life despite being switched off and drains the battery. It gets worse over time. Here's my way to cope with it:

  1. Leave the switch in the ON position AT ALL TIMES. Don't fiddle with it.
  2. Set AUTO POWER OFF2 minutes.
  3. OVF POWER SAVE MODE – ON
This turns off the sensor when used with the optical viewfinder, except when you half press to measure.
  4. QUICK START MODE – ON
(comes to life in 0.7 instead 2.7 after half pressing the shutter when the camera is sleeping).
  5. Be sure to to switch to OVF every time you stop shooting to benefit from OVF Power Save mode.
  6. If you are not using the camera for prolonged time, or pack Your gear for transport, remove the battery.

That's it. No problem.
