Is the RAM upgradeable on the 2016 MacBook Pro with touchbar?

Hi there,

I am very interested in upgrading my 2016 15" Macbook Pro with touchbar to 32GB. Is this possible? Can the original 16GB RAM be removed and replaced with a 32GB module?

Thanks for any advice on this!

Thanks @elvrich09 and @tomchai for your replies.

No post-purchase upgrades does seem to be Apple's approach to newer Macbook Pros (as opposed to my early 2011 MBP, which I upgraded RAM and HD/SSD on) but this post by OWC, and discussed on MacRumors, shows that the SSD is removeable on the new 2016 non-touchbar model:

That gives me hope that the RAM may be removeable and upgradeable as well (the above posts don't seem to answer that question).

Exteremely unlikely. You can consider yourself lucky if the SSD is replaceable, replaceable RAM would be pushing your luck.

von

Only the low end 13" with function keys has the removable SSD. The other models don't.

I'm not gonna say that it isn't cause I don't know for sure. But with the retina MBP not having upgradable ram. I can't imagine this model would have removable ram.

Hi, I think is not probable to upgrade from 16gb to 32gb, because the RAM is DDR3, so the top of amount in DDR3 that may support that board is just 16GB, it's an electronic limit

No, not even the SSD is upgradeable, don't even think about RAM.

Correct! This system follows the new MacBook system design concept. No upgrades possible after date of purchase!

Also the Touch ID chip inside the Touch Bar makes it harder to repair. The Touch Bar and the security module on the board must be paired. Don't even think about easy repairs.

von

@tomchai - The T1 chip is the enclave its hard to tell from the vid but I think its part of the main logic board not the touch bar its self. Maybe when the teardown team does the teardown we'll know for sure.

von

The SSDs have been upgradeable and the 2016 13" MacBook Pro (no touchbar) is upgradeable so odds are the touchbar models will be too.

von

Shareef Yousef - You may want to review the vid on Apples web site and reviewers comments. The 'New' Macbook Pro we are talking about here is a complete redesign from the older models. This series in fact has soldered RAM & SSD in the models with touch bar. - Sorry I was hoping too ;-{

Thanks @elvrich09 and @tomchai.

The SSD on new entry-level 13" Macbook Pros is removeable (and logically, upgradeable) hence I am hoping the RAM might also be...

I haven't seen any site that confirms what the RAM status is on 2016 Macbook Pros. No one has their hands on the 15" Touchbar models, so in time hopefully we'll get an answer.

According to the announcement event presentation, the SSD is on the main board on a Touch Bar model. The RAM chips are under the shields next to the CPU. Both seem to be soldered shut and there are no SSD module connectors like in the 2016 non-Touch Bar models.

If the presentation slide is accurate, the device has zero upgradeability.

Watch the OWC vid here: SSD in Late 2016 Entry-Level removable Jump to the 6:40 time-point in the vid where they review things. Very clearly they state this model has soldered RAM. Granted, they are not talking about the touch bar version systems but the Apple vid makes it clear the RAM is soldered on these models as well.

Think of it this way these systems are the new low end MacBook Pro's and when Apple is moved in to the new campus by mid year next year we'll see an upper end set of models, they may have more expandability (which I too am hoping for).

von

The one sad part here is the removable SSD is using still a newer custom Apple interface! It does look like a SATA connector but the key is in the wrong location. I had wished they had stuck with a standards based interface. If OWC does make a replacement offering it will be expensive! And it will be 3 to 4 years before we'll see it.

FYI - Here's the IFIXIT teardown on the low end 13": MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys Late 2016 Teardown

Thank you @tomchai and @dan for your helpful replies. I appreciate it.
