Is a failed hard disk terminal?

My hard disk has totally failed - beyond recovery. So I have no Windows op system and no utilities available. I tried to boot from a saved DVD copy of the OP system - no luck.

Is the machine destined for the scrapheap ? I DO have a copy of Windows7 on a DVD, and the original utilities, also on DVD. If there is hope - what type of HD do I need - are 2.5ins disksall compatible, or do I have to buy from ASUS ? By the way - this laptop will not work with Windows10.

bobbrown65 not terminal for your computer but terminal for the drive. Your computer uses a SATA 3Gb/s interface hard drive, something like a Western Digital WD3200BEVT Most drives with the same form factor and interface will fit. You do have to reinstall your OS. Replacement cost for this is around $50USD, cheaper than a new computer. Here is a video that shows how to replace the drive.

Can the PC DVD reader still work to load my Windows7 without the utilities on the old HD ?

You would have to set your BIOS to read the optical drive as boot device #1 and have a bootable windows disk. Something like a recover disk, the install disk does not work for this. You cannot run Windows from the install disk

just replace the hard disk. This is a mechanical issue, one that has to do with entropy. Entropy is not reversible. Your current drive is SHOT.

I understand that the HD can be replaced, but since all the Utilities were on the failed disk, how can the system read a DVD if the DVD reading utility has gone ?

von

the bios reads it.
