"Not enough space in Device storage. Delete some..." greets Email try!

An error prompt "Not enough space in Device storage. Delete some files and try again" is all I can get when I open my email in the Galaxy's standard Email app that's worked okay for years. Suggested remedies I've found are overcomplicated. Someone just tell me the obvious way to re-acquire email, given that I'm happy leaving everything to my laptop computer, as to long term archives, and short term operations will be the smartphone's limited role for me!
