USB connection is not working while my phone is ON

Hello,

I am presently facing a strange issue with my Honor 6. Nothing has gone wrong on my phone for almost 1 year but recently, impossible to charge my battery while my phone was on. Today, after a few weeks thinking my phone was just dieing, I have tried to make a back up and wanted to save all my data on my computer. However, impossible to connect my phone to my computer. Then I realized the problem was probably due to my USB parameters (No interface asking for mode to choose when I plug USB).

I finally did my back up but issue is still there : I can only use USB while my phone is OFF... meaning I only charge my phone when it is OFF.. :-(

I did not find any solution on internet and did not find an option to allow this interface to come back, even by trying to go in "developer options"

Could you please help?

Thanks

Nicolas

Hi @charbobo57

As you didn't state what solutions from the internet you tried, try the following:

1. Try using a different USB cable or connecting to a different USB port on your PC or even try on a USB port on a different computer. (This eliminates the USB cable, your computer's USB port(s) or your computer as a possible cause of the problem)

2. Inspect the USB port in the phone using a strong light and a magnifying glass.

a). Check that all 5 pins are there, especially the middle pins and that they are all straight and parallel with each other. (pins 2 & 3 are the data pins, 1 & 5 are the power pins, pin 4 is the 'sense' pin for use with OTG etc.)

b). Check that there is no lint or dust in the port enclosure. If there is use a vacuum cleaner with short sharp bursts to try and remove the lint or dust. If it is stubborn, try gently using a wooden toothpick to dislodge the debris. DO NOT use a metal probe and try not to damage the pins.

3. The USB port could be loose on the systemboard. Does it feel loose when you insert a USB cable and gently (stress gently) try to move the cable from side to side where it enters the port. If so it may be that it is loose and that the phone would have to be opened and the port inspected. If it is loose you would need to have SMD (surface mounted device ) soldering expertise and tools to perform the repair. I recommend that you take it to a reputable, professional phone repair service and ask for a quote, because if you don't have the skill you could cause more damage than when you started in trying to fix it.

Sounds like a possible software issue.

Have you Tried a factory reset?

Hello, thanks for answering,

I did it through the parameters options, but I know there is another way to do it by pressing 2 buttons on the edge of the phone. Is it exactly the same ?

Hello guys thank you very much for taking time to answer me.

@jayeff : 1. Try using a different USB cable or connecting to a different USB port on your PC or even try on a USB port on a different computer. (This eliminates the USB cable, your computer's USB port(s) or your computer as a possible cause of the problem)

==> I have tried another USB cable + block to charge my phone and I am facing the same problem : it is only working when phone is OFF

"2. Inspect the USB port in the phone using a strong light and a magnifying glass.

a). Check that all 5 pins are there, especially the middle pins and that they are all straight and parallel with each other. (pins 2 & 3 are the data pins, 1 & 5 are the power pins, pin 4 is the 'sense' pin for use with OTG etc.)"

==> 5 pins are here and all straigth and parallel.

"b). Check that there is no lint or dust in the port enclosure. If there is use a vacuum cleaner with short sharp bursts to try and remove the lint or dust. If it is stubborn, try gently using a wooden toothpick to dislodge the debris. DO NOT use a metal probe and try not to damage the pins."

==> only at the entrance of the USB port it looks a bit like rust (because of the color) but on a very small part and not that close to the pins. Otherwise, nothing, everything is clean

"3. The USB port could be loose on the systemboard. "

==> I tried but nothing. And when it is a lil unplugged (like not very well plugged so you can have some ON/OFF charge), it is still only working when phone is OFF.

BTW Thank you very much for trying solving my problem.

@virgil Hey ! I am totally newbie for this kind of stuff. I did find the ADB Control for Root Users but what is Fastboot ?

Best regards

Nicola

Ok so I figured out fastboot was directly linked with ADB control but what I understood is it will allow me to boot the phone from my computer. Problem is USB connection is not working if I turn on my phone...

Could you please explain me :-) ?

Thanks

Hi @charbobo57

Since you did a reset and you can't charge when the phone is ON and you can't connect to a PC it seems as though you may have 2 problems.

one with the charging circuits software and one with the USB controller in the phone.

As another check, if you have an appropriate OTG (On The Go) cable, connect a USB mouse to the USB port of the phone via the OTG cable and see if it works. You should get the light come on in the mouse (if it is an optical mouse) and also a cursor will appear in the phone so that you can scroll and click etc. Do not use it for long as it uses the battery from the phone.

All this is trying to do is to prove whether the USB port works when used in different ways. i.e. what works and what doesn't and you already know mostly what doesn't

Hi @jayeff I will try to find this kind of micro USB/USB link to test it. That's a good idea !!

Early in the week, I went to PSM (certifiate repairing industry) because I thought my phone was under guarantee. However, because of a very small crack in the corner of my phone, the guarantee won't work and all will be on me. So I kept my phone and I am still trying to find an answer to my problemZ

Hi @charbobo57 ,

Here's one. The micro end goes into the phone and then a mouse plugs into the 'female' USB plug end of the cable.

OTG means that phone will turn on power to the mouse because pins 4&5 in the micro plug are joined together. In a normal USB plug pin 4 is empty.
