Usb Port Malfuction After Bad Game Controller Inserted

I recently purchased a bad usb video game controller and in testing it on my Dell Inspirion 7720, the USB ports have failed to recognize anything. I found a bad driver for "Intel(R) 7 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller - 1E2D" in the Device Manager and re-installed the driver and it was without the caution sign. That didn't solve the problem and my mouse blinks at the laser each time I plug it in but doesn't work. I have looked up the BIOS and apart from "Disable Drive Signature", I can't find anything pertaining to the faulty USB ports. I have tried updating but the computer says the drivers are up to date. I am stuck at this and would appreciate feedback.

Update (04/07/2017)

It's a dell 7720 Inspiron 17r special edition but I recently changed the board to a 5720 board.

That's odd. A USB device can't disable port because it's faulty. Even if it directly short circuited the power the PC has protection against it. What exact model is your Computer?

Hi,

Have you tried 'uninstalling all the USB host controllers in Device manager, restarting the laptop and letting Windows 'find new hardware' and reinstalling the USB controllers?

No I haven't, and when it started there was a USB host 3.0 controller with caution sign, I trouble shot it and it came out fine but since then it hasn't come up on the Device manager. Only one USB port powers stuff but still doesn't connect, the other three just flash my USB mouse laser but doesn't power it.

HI,

Not sure what you mean by "No I haven't and when it started... "

Did you uninstall the USBs, restart and then the USB 3 was faulty or what?

Also what do you mean by "flash the mouse laser"? Does it pulse the light on and off continously or just briefly or is it on steady but the mouse doesn't work.

Have you checked the Power Management settings in the USB Root hubs to see if the check box for "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is unchecked. Go to Device manager > Universal Serial Bus Controllers > right click USB Root Hub (Check all of them). > Power Management.

I uninstalled and restarted and it's still the same issue. The mouse laser flashes when I plug it in and It stays on if I push in in midway but still no sound or notification. I have refreshed my system and all my hardware are back to square one and it still doesn't work but now the bad controller is on show. It's the "Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller- 0100(Microsoft) In its properties it says "This Device Cannot Start. (Code 10)

Basing on what I am seeing on the comments, you've tried everything. It appears your USB port daughterboard suffered a failure. You'll probably have to get it replaced. Have you tried a diagnostics test ePSA test on the device? If not, I would recommend doing so.

How to run an enhanced Preboot System Assessment

  1. 1) Shut down the computer.
  2. 2) Turn the computer on, as soon as you turn the computer on, tap the F12 keyrepeatedly.
  3. 3) Wait for the One Time Boot Menu comes up on the screen.
  4. 4) Scroll down on the menu, and select Diagnostics.

Inform me of the results!
