Elizabeth Apodaca what exactly do you mean by "blowing my coil"? what happens? What exact model is your Ford and what engine, transmission etc. does it have?

von

It gets so hot it melts the plastic cap and its a 460 4 speed its the xlt lariat 4x4

von

Also how many coils have you blown and is it an immediate thing or does it take time to happen . What does the truck run like between coil failures .Im not sure what you mean by icm solenoid ?

von

I got it in tje end of February and ive gone thew 12 coils and it usualy about 1 week each coil last unless im driving for long.periods at time i cango threw 2 in one day and it drives good but when the coil starts going out it starts bogging down and running like crap and by icm i mean ignition control module

von

Ok that make sense Ive seen this in older LTDs This truck is older than a 1987. more like 1979 . Check the EGR valve for leaks look at the base gasket . It probably is blowing exhaust gas directly from the cylinder head onto the coil and melting it . Just a secondary note . When replacing the gasket make sure you dont knock any of the carbon built up around round the base of the EGR into the manifold as it can end up in a cylinder and the engine will knock as if you put a rod out of it . If it does happen spray carbon cleaner into the cylinders to dissolve the carbon .Hope this helps

Its a 87 definatly not a 79

von

Then your running the wrong coil the coil in 87 should be mounted on the top of the distributor. Is this the original motor?

von

Yes it is but its is supposed to be electronic fuel injected but is concerted back to carburetor

von

Is the truck a F250?

von

If so the coil for this truck should look like this http://www.rockauto.com/info/903/5C1116_...

Most likely do to the wire harness connected to the coil. Over time those wire get soft due to oil leaking around them. A short to ground would cause the coil to melt and since you already replaced it...the problem must lie in the wiring....also in that truck the wire from the coil should go to the icm which is not much wire to search for a short. Hope this helps
