IT does sound like a sick inverter its worth casting an eye over the
board for poor solder joints or connectors not seated properly portable devices are always getting dropped .

Give us a little more information. Are you saying that you can still see it but it is very dark? Did it get dropped or anything? It does sound like the backlight to me.
