Using a MK2004 GAL in a 20 GB iPod (Thick)?

Hi there,

I recently aquired a 20GB Ipod 2G with a bad HDD ( Checked using HD Tune). I would like to know if I would be able to use a MK2004GAL instead of the MK2003GAH that is in the device currently. I saw the compatibility list but it only specified the thing 2G as being able to use it. Does it really matter?

I have a better idea.

Why not save power and use a larger storage than 20gb.

Here is a CF to iPod2g IDE adapter.

The reviewer said it worked in their 2g iPod.

A 64gb CompactFlash is around $45

First off, thanks for the super quick response. While that definitely sounds like a great and potentially easier route to go down. I would like to maintain the originality of the use of a HDD. I like the way it feels when it works and you can hear it work. I want to keep the iPod as original as possible. I would also like to add I see the 40 GB MK4006GAH is compatible with the 2G thick on the list. Does it matter that they never made a 40 GB version of the 2G?

I can't remember what the size limit of a 2g is, but the 40gb should work as long as it is also an IDE 1.8" interface.

von

According to CNET, it has the same specs except for the difference in drive size. So yes, it has an IDE 1.8 interface

One more question, sorry for double posting. When I restore the iPod, is it true I will need the AC adapter to complete the restore process? I found the iPod in question at a garage sale and they didnt have any accessories.

von

There's no way to charge via AC Adapter while syncing. Firewire I've heard doesn't provide enough power to charge and sync at the same time, but I don't think you will have a problem if you use USB to charge/sync on the PC/MAC.
