Attempting to upgrade memory, but laptop won’t boot

Hello all,

I was recently given an old Aspire One ZG5 by a friend that I decided to clean up, upgrade, and give to my sister. After installing a new SSD and wireless card, I tried to upgrade the system to hold 1.5 GB of memory instead of only 1. I bought a 1 GB PC2-5300 stick from Komputer Bay and installed it, but the system refuses to do anything, even turn on the screen. I can hear the fan and see the power light, however, so I know the system has power.

My question is: did I buy the wrong kind of memory, or did I get a DOA memory stick?

The original memory stick was a Samsung 512 MB PC2-5300. I was thinking there could be some kind of issue with memory timing, but I’m not sure how I would address that.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Edit: here is a picture of the new memory stick:

Hi,

Does it still boot OK with the 1GB RAM module removed from the slot? (should be still 512MB of RAM onboard)

If it doesn't then perhaps you've done something else when you opened the laptop to replace the RAM. You may have to go back and check over what you touched.

If it does then it suggests a problem with the RAM module.

Hi @colonelpanic762

When you revert to the original memory, does it works?

would be good if you can describe more of your new memory,

e.g. manufacturer, even better if you can take pictures of it.

there are cases, either new RAM is DOA or not compatible with your laptop.

but you can try this first,

Check for any possible BIOS updates (Your PC must be bootable)

Key in your laptop serial no to check.

just fyi on your laptop supported memory.

Yes, I updated the BIOS and reinstalled the original memory stick and the laptop booted just fine. I can upload a picture of the new stick for you later when I have time.
