Emission Control system light on; Engine dies on stopping

The Emission control system light came on while driving my Audi TT yesterday and since then the engine started to misfire and dies on stopping. Car not due to service. Fuel lock was secured properly. Is this a quick fix or an expensive affair? Thanks
