It ran out of water while making some coffee, and now it makes a very small amount of coffee and with no crema. Is it true that if I ran it with no water it means the machine is broken for life?

It is likely there’s some air inside the circuit where there should be just water..running the machine while dry might have caused some overheating but I would be a bit surprised that broke it for good. Try running a few coffee making cycles without actually using coffee. If you still have the user manual you may also check what to do before first use and do that again.
