Tablet corrupts sim card?

I got a Samsung Tab 4 from a friend and when I inserted my AT&T SIM card to the AT&T tab it all of a sudden said it couldn't read the SIM card and when I took it out of the tablet and put it back into my phone my phone completely shut down and Power It Off please help what caused this?
