sharrison DEF and DPF may be on the same exhaust pipe, but they are not related. No reason for you to consider changing the filter. Usually the DEF would have to be checked via refractometer but GM obviously cannot do this. So what happens on your diesel is that the the DEF's effectiveness is measured via a pre and post catalyst NoX sensor. Now there apparently is a test procedure that GM uses (still trying to find out more about it) which will evaluate the DEF injector and the NoX sensors. Commonly for your Cruze are bad NoX sensors.

Thanks very much! I'm going to see if this works. Local Chevy dealer wanted to charge me $1800, and couldn't get the part anyway. Got a feeling you're right!

One thing that works, drive it like 30 or 40 miles hard. Like 60 in 4th gear. Sometimes the DEF crystallizes on the injector. That worked for me a few times. However you should look at the injector and the NOX2. The last time that did not work. I replaced my NOX2 and it did not clear the code.

Also download the Torque app and Biscan GM and you can read the sensor readings, do a service regen and a few other things the dealers overcharge you for.

I've run ours hot like this multiple times, like at least 8. I put it in 3rd and run the RPMs at about 4200 for 10-15 min. I live out in the country and have a bunch of empty road to do this. Next day the message usually clears and the countdown goes away.

I'm stuck right now. I've done this a couple of times and I'm down to the 55MPH limit and the next level is 4 MPH. Not sure how to approach the problem now. I will poke around these forums for some ideas. Very frustrating, seriously. Constant problems w the DEF system. I believe there is someone doing a DEF system delete. involves new down pipe and computer programming. I don't know if this can be done with online guidance or if I would need to take it somewhere.

We love this car otherwise. But have considered trading it in and getting something else just due to the eff'n DEF problems.

We had the DEF QUALITY code chronically for 4 years after a rock punctured the oil pan. Long story short, insurance paid for all repairs but the DEF QUALITY light would continue to appear. All repairs were done at a GM certified car dealer service center. They all wanted and did replace the sensors to no avail. Finally our local GM/Chevy dealer did a trial and error replacement of many parts and it was indeed the rear (turbo) NOX replacement that seems to have resolved the matter. It’s been running great and I hope this helps. The part itself is about $1500.
