Are you able to boot up in Target Disk Mode after doing a SMC reset?

Starts out with the chime and apple like it's loading then goes to white screen no pointer just white. Tried reset sms pram and boot to external drive with fresh os and USB drive with os installer same thing boot to white. Even changed the ram.

@danj yes its gives me the Option with I hold the t key I do have another MacBook same type what can I do I'll have to go buy a firewire cable tho

von

So to be clear you can get to the Target Disk Mode screen which should be showing you the FireWire or Thunderbolt Icons.

We only need to get this far as this is a simple test to isolate out whats happening. If you can get the icons showing up its telling us the dedicated GPU has failed.

von

@danj yes it gives me the logo for what your saying. I have heard if folks disabling the gpu and using the Intel gpu graphics do know how to do this when system is in this state?

Thank you, can you try powering on the computer while holding Command and S on the keyboard until it stops at a prompt and then enter nvram fa4ce28d-b62f-4c99-9cc3-6815686e30f9:gpu-power-prefs=%01%00%00%00 and then type reboot? There is another solution for fixing GPU failure, there is only two issues with this fix which is brightness control doesn’t work (and may be fixed in the future) and mini DisplayPort doesn’t work because it connects to the dGPU https://computeco.de/Demux

Worked and I'm in the Mac now thanks man did this disable the dedicated gpu?

Your Welcome!, Yes it disables the dGPU, this is a temporary fix that will stop working if you reset nvram and pram or update your computer or clean install macOS (although if you do again it will fix the computer), There is another solution for fixing GPU failure, there is only two issues with this fix which is brightness control doesn’t work (and may be fixed in the future) and mini DisplayPort doesn’t work because it connects to the dGPU https://computeco.de/Demux

The easies fix is to connect your other system to your broken system via FireWire or Thunderbolt to gain access to the GPU driver Kext and just delete it. This was the solution with older OS-X releases now Apple has SIP which gets in the way. And deleting the Kext won’t allow your system to sleep properly with the newer OS’s

I haven’t had a 2011 with a bad GPU pass my desk for quite awhile so I haven’t tested things with High Sierra or newer.

After removing the resistor from the motherboard sometimes the computer will try to use the dGPU and the computer will show a black screen.

There is a another option here!

Which is what I tend to do and thats just replace the logic board with a 2012 model which doesn't encounter this problem as the GPU is a better design.
