THE DEFINITIVE ANSWER ON BATTERY APNs

Hi guys,

I'm fairly new to iFixIt, but I have been repairing iPhones (in the UK) for nearly two years now, so I'm very experienced with hardware repairs. However, one thing that's always got me confused is the APN numbers for batteries, and the real headaches they cause!

It seems that every iPhone I see has a different APN printed on the battery, and in my experience, replacing it with a battery of a different APN causes it to either not power on properly, or cause "Error 29" when trying to restore. These issues are fairly well-documented on here, and I accept that it is indeed an issue, solved by replacing the battery with the SAME APN. Fair enough.

But, here's the thing, how do people "get away" with DIY battery replacements? SURELY it can't just be chance that when they order a replacement battery, it just happens to match up to the APN of the battery currently in their iPhone? Because if it doesn't - this causes many problems as described above! I must have seen no less than 7 or 8 different APNs for 3G and 3GS batteries, so how can people possibly survive a battery replacement when they don't know the APN of their battery, or don't even know about the "APN story" at all?

Today, I went to replace a battery in an iPhone 3G, which had APN 616-0366. I only had APN 616-0428 iPhone 3G batteries, so I thought I'd give it a go anyway. Lo and behold... it wouldn't boot up! It got stuck at the Apple logo, and then started fading really slowly and powering off - obviously this was caused by the different type of battery I had just installed. I took out the 0428 and put the 0366 back in, and it worked just fine again. This situation has happened many times before with different APNs.

So, I was wondering if anybody had some sort of list of all the different APNs that are available, and which model of iPhone they work in? Surely big iPhone repair companies don't have stock of every single APN - or do they? If they do, then how does the logic work with DIY replacement batteries from eBay and the like? Do individuals always face problems when the wrong APN battery for their iPhone gets delivered?

Any clarification would be GREATLY received!

All the best,

Josh.

Do you know if it is important for iPhone 4?

von

No. Based on what we have found the APN has not been an issue for the iPhone 4 thus far.

Josh, with the iPhone battery APN issue, the APN for the iPhone 3G has little to no bearing on the boot sequence that I have seen. However, with the iPhone 3GS the magical APN appears to be 616-0435.

Error -29 was not an issue until the release of iOS 4. It was then then that Apple decided to execute their version of Order 66 if you will. This error has caused headaches in the lives of many like unto yourself. I don't know all of the variety of the APN's, but as I said the 616-0435 APN has solved the issue for the iPhone 3GS Error -29.

If you are experiencing an issue with a 3G encountering the Error -29, you may be using a 3GS battery, but I personally have seen no issues with the iPhone 3G battery and Error -29.

Update

As of 2012, the following APNs are also compatible: 616-0431, 616-0432, 616-0433, 616-0434, or 616-0435. We have tested these and have not had any issues with Error -29.

I do believe the days of endless woes of Error 29 are over.

obviously this is an issue- and knowing compatibility WOULD be very helpful. I just tried to replace a 0428- with a 0366. it would not even begin to turn on unless it was plugged in, and then would start booting and then stop and turn off after 5 - 10 sec. put the 0428 back in (which looks newer than the one they sent- the 0366 solder connections and wiring in the ribbon is thinner / different- and it works fine. now to get "New Harbor" to send the right one/ refund my $5

I remember there was an issue way back. Check on here Try to restore get a error 29

Also, it sounds like you may have purchased a battery for an iPhone 3G instead of an iPhone 3GS.

same issue, i replaced the original with a 0347 and it would power up, i'd get like 30 seconds and then reboot itself, put the original back in, works fine. going to send it back for a replacement and give it one more shot before upgrade my phone.

David from what i understand there is a tiny fuse on the board that might be damadged it is near the do not remove sticker.

A larger view of that fuse could help me. I have also replaced my battery with a 0435. The phone worked once I got past the white screen of death. The phone worked until the battery charge depleted. I used a wall charger a computer neither charged the phone. About to send the battery back and order a 0431.

Any suggestions?

Just a note: I replaced the 616-0435 by a 616-0435, same VPN as well. However, that didn't work, it refused to charge in three different devices. So, I put in the old battery again -> everything is fine again....very frustrating
