Blank screen no logo when powering on laptop

Hi everyone,

I recently replaced my motherboard on my asus X550Za and replaced the CMOS battery. I had previously made a post that the screen didn’t even turn on before so I’m glad at least that’s not an issue anymore.

When I power on the laptop, the screen turns on, but no logo is displayed at all. I tried to access the BIOS on this blank black screen but nothing happens. I tried F2 as the manufacturer’s manual says for this computer, but nothing comes up. Is there a way to hard reset the BIOS or do something to access some menu?

P.S. I replaced my old hard drive with a blank one that had more memory storage. Not sure if it matters that I don’t currently have my original hard drive in the computer right now.

Thanks in advance!!!

To save us all time try the appropiate ones from the steps below:

then let us know what happens after each step.

Always look for the simplest solution first such as improperly socketed RAM

or incorrectly inserted ribbon cables.

Hi Mike,

I've gone through that video which is why I ended up replacing the CMOS battery for the BIOS as all of those steps and fixes didn't do anything about my black screen. After I replaced the CMOS battery, the screen finally turned on, but no logos appear and I can't access the BIOS from the F keys.

From the video:

I took the battery out and held the power button. Once the battery was back in, the computer turned on and the screen was lit, but still blank with no logos. I took out the battery again and plugged in the charger with the same results; computer turns on, screen is lit, but blank with no start up logos.

The fan is running and keyboard functions work like caps lock, ctrl+alt+del (it turns the screen off for a bit). The ribbons on the motherboard are for the keyboard and the hard drive so I don't think those were attached incorrectly. I do have a new hard drive that I bought in it. Does it matter that I don't have the old one inside it?

I appreciate any advice! Thanks!

Hi Linette,

Does the computer going through the whole bootup process? That is the drive light blinks on and off for a period of time as in loading the operating system.

Try putting the old drive back in. It wouldn't hurt.

You say " ...and the screen was lit... ". What can you see on the screenl, even if only very faintly? What was the connector for the screen?

Go back over ALL the steps:

Got to go. Back later.

@aactech Hi Mike,

Yes I went through all of the steps from that guide and I got the same result as before: black screen. It wasn't until I actually replaced the CMOS battery from a different ASUS guide that I actually got the screen to light up/turn on this time.

You can't see anything on the screen as in, nothing comes up; no logos no loading circle dots. The screen is ON and is fully bright, but black with no information coming up at all. Before replacing the CMOS battery, the screen was black and would not turn on at all. When I connect the laptop to my external monitor, it says that there is no input signal.

My motherboard has an LVDs connector. Is that what you mean for the screen connector?

Thanks again for your responses!

@linttastic

Ya, what ever connects the screen to the motherboard.

Long shot again. Have you played with Brightness and Contrast controls?

Reflash BIOS. Check ASUS for the BIOS flash drive key strokes.

???? What else.

Hi @linttastic ,

It may be set to use "Fast Boot" which has to be disabled for you to get into BIOS without an OS installed.

Try the following to see if it works:

Make sure the laptop is turned off.

Press the power button and hold it down. The system should emit three short beeps

After the beeps, release the power button before' the 4-second shutdown override.

The power button menu should now display.

Press F3 to disable Fast Boot and hopefully you should be able to access BIOS now in the normal way.
