Can I use the internal optical drive as an internal USB port?

Hello! I use a wireless USB external mouse with my 2012 MacBook Pro. I’ve seen the mod that allows you to replace the optical drive with a second SSD. But that got me thinking. Is it possible to use a similar mod to have an internal USB port? I couldn’t imagine using my MacBook without the mouse but I find it annoying to always have an adapter hogging up my USB port. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The SATA ports are generally designed for the purpose, storage access.

One suggestion is to get wireless bluetooth mouse for your mac, to eliminate the usb dongles.
