Black screen, no sound, no keyboard lights but a responsive Trackpad.

Greetings iFixit community, It's my first time here - although not for a good reason.

My 1 year 7 months old Macbook pro just died on me today morning. I remember leaving it on my desk with 7% charge on it and when I woke up I couldn't turn it on. I can only power it on and off (which I found out since trackpad works only when the system is on)

As I stated, these are the observations:

  1. No display
  2. No keyboard lights
  3. No sound
  4. Trackpad is responsive (it only registers click when the machine is powering on)

Here's what I've tried so far:

  1. Reset SMC multiple times
  2. Reset NVRAM multiple times
  3. Countless reboots with power supply plugged in and plugged out.

I'm honestly lost as I'm a student and this is my go-to system. Since due to the pandemic, I can't venture out and check out any Apple-repair site (although I would like that to be my last option).

Thank you all in advance!

Hi! Were you able to find a solution? I have the same exact issue.

Can you give us a bit more on the systems history:

  • Have you had a liquid spill or sat the system down on a wet surface?
  • Have you dropped your system?
  • Do you run your system hard?
  • Do you mostly leave the system on the charger?

Have you had your system serviced by Apple getting the outstanding extended warranty repairs done?

1. No, there was no liquid damage but my environment is little humid.

2. I haven't dropped my system in the past year.

3. Not 'hard' but my usage is certainly little heavy. Enough to make it hot mostly.

4. No, if the battery is full I remove the charger. There are maybe very few instances where I keep it plugged in throughout night.

The link you've added is interesting but I doubt they would consider my appeal in my country.

Thank you for your timely response!

You could try to live the power connected overnight and at the morning, after the SMC and PRAM resets see what’s happening. If it is nothing - then the battery most probably needs to be replaced. Perhaps even in your country it could be replaced free of charge by the authorized Apple Service Center. There is no harm in asking them about your options, right?

You can also replace the A1713 battery by yourself. It could be sourced from e-bay, for example, and the replacement guide is available here on iFixit. I prefer using the heat-gun though, but it is totally doable if you out of Apple’s coverage.

iFixit offers a nice kit MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Function Keys, Late 2016-2017) Battery and offers a better warranty than the eBay sellers which are mostly peddling seconds.

Be careful buying off of Amazon & eBay! Very easy to be taken!

I'm curious about leaving it on live power through the night, that's something I haven't tried yet. However I doubt it's a battery issue because even with no live power the trackpad responds!

von

@danj the kit is nice indeed, but spending 150 for the battery replacement kit for the notebook that is already kind of obsolete makes the project of replacing the battery non economically viable for many.

Most of us don't even use our Macbooks Pro out of the safe harbor anymore so why bother? Yes we do still want to, from time to time.

But that IMHO is definitely not 150 + hassles + labor kind of want to.

@Seff Ka - You got too much money in your pocket ;-}

The 2017 Fn is still a very nice and useful MacBook Pro which should get you 4 to 5 more years! And well worth the $150

@Jojo Adventurer the goal is to eliminate the most prosaic cause of such a behavior, i.e. a deeply discharged battery state, which could lead in most cases to the behavior you've described. If your battery is indeed in deeply discharged state no one would really tell how long it will take for it to begin to accept the charge again and come out of electrical coma, thus was my suggestion to live it overnight.

In light of what you previously described I admit I am puzzled on what do you mean by the "trackpad responds" on the, from your words, "dead" A1708, especially with the exclamation point at the end ))

but it does not change what I would have had suggested.
