Quick Sanity Check: XPS 13 9365 Screen replacement

Hey Gang!

I have had a Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 for a few years now. Not the fast Laptop in the world, but I have really enjoyed it as a small, light, away-from-home machine.

Sadly, about 1 month in quarantinin’ my the bottom 2-3cm of the screen started failing.

I am fairly confident it is the screen/touch assembly itself, but just wanted a quick sanity check before I fork out the cash for a replacement.

Symptoms:

The bottom 2-3cm of the screen vary between horizontal lines and nothing visible, the actual image being visible under flashing black lines, and some line that should be visible being repeated in the whole area. I have attached an image. Does not look to bad right now, but like I said, it fluctuates.

Block Image

All this is the case from the very moment it turns on, including in BIOS, startup, usw. External monitors work fine.

Is there anything else I could check to really make sure it is the screen assembly?

I would rather not purchase and install only to discover something else is the problem.

Thank you all for your help!

PS: If anybody has a source for genuine dell replacement parts like this in europe, I would love to hear it!!!

Hi @theschilk ,

Here’s the service manual for the laptop, taken from this webpage

Go to p.26 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove/replace the display assembly.

Check if the display cable is connected properly at both ends, motherboard and display and that it is not damaged where it passes through the hinge from the body of the laptop to the display.

Other than that all you can do is try a replacement screen and check.

The part number for the display is NPF60. Not 100% sure of this though. Sometimes the part number can be found on the back of the LCD panel itself. It may be prudent to check and verify first. ;-)

If it is (or whatever it is) search online for Dell NPF60 (or correct part number) to hopefully find suppliers that suit.

Hopefully this is of some help.

Hi @jayeff !

Thanks for the quick reply!

I have had the laptop open. Connectors are seated properly on the motherboard, and as far as I can see the cable goes straight to the assembly, no more connectors.

Thank you for the exact assembly number, helps alot.

I just really wanted to check that there is nothing else I can easily confirm is not the issue before I spring for a new screen!

Thanks!

Hi @theschilk

Maybe try to get a supplier that offers returns for only a minimal restocking fee etc to lower the cost to you if the display is not the problem.

Good luck.

@jayeff Thats the plan!

Thank you so much!
