Hello.
Here's an infomation for those who are still unsure if they should upgrade.
I have an iMac Late 2015 (17,1) 27" 5K A1419 EMC2834 with 1TB Fusion Drive, which means 1TB HDD via SATA and 24GB via PCIe.
I have never done such a procedure before. But I can say in advance, it was worth it.
I ordered two upgrade kits from OWC to refresh both drives.
- Aura Pro X2: https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/S3DA...
- OWC 6G SSD 480GB: https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/K27I...
While waiting for the package, I backed up my data and splitted the Fusion Drive.
For the upgrade, I studied various YouTube videos and the one from OWC.
It took about an hour to disassemble all the components.
I used a brush and an air compressor to clean the individual parts once the iMac was open.
The Aura Pro X2 Flash SSD fit right out of the box.
Including the installation of the new SATA SSD, it took about 45 min to assemble without the display. I guess the thermal sensor is no longer necessary since 2015, but it was included, so to be safe, I installed it.
I installed MacOS Big Sur, played the backup and tested the whole system first. Everything worked flawlessly. Even Hibernation Mode, and the fan ran quietly.
Sticking the display took about 30min, and you have to be extra careful.
Four hands would probably be better, but it also works with two.
Conclusion:
I don't know why OWC calls the upgrade kit incompatible for the iMac Late 2015. Everything works smoothly.
Was it worth it? Yes, definitely. The speed compared to the Fusion Drive is immense.
Tests with Black Magic showed a write speed of 2250 MB/s and a read speed of 2920 MB/s.
So I can only encourage anyone who is unsure.
SATA SSD
PCIe SSD

As far as the MacWorld write-up: On putting in an M.2 SSD into iMac's, Go for it if you feel so confident on what they wrote.
My clients today tend to be heavy users, Video and Music production either as a profession or as students. Before I went on my own, I worked at some large engineering firms supporting their Mac systems.
We where lucky to get some top notch engineering talent to help us review M.2 drives for MacBook Pro's. At the time Apple was not selling large SSD's (1 & 2 TB drives) which a lot of our staff needed.
Our testing at that time showed the adapters where not very good and even still today I've encountered a few systems which I needed to yank them to get the system to be functional.
To be clear! I'm not a hater of M.2 drives. If the systems interface is designed to support them use them! It's when you force fit a drive which was not designed to work in the system by the system maker is the root issue.

Thanks for all of the answers!!!
I have iMac 2015 and I’m already mentally ready to buy a new 2020.
But I decided to try to give this system a 2nd chance for another 1/2 year (then I will still change it)
Scalped my i7-6700K, planted it on liquid metal, removed some of the throttling,
The SSD (I have a SATA SSD in the system now) If there is such an opportunity to put NVMe blade SSD I would like to.
I’m from Russia and our purchase of the original Apple SSD does not cost $620 like you it costs us $800/900, which is quite a bit of unreal money for an upgrade for a couple of years.
Therefore, I was so interested in OWC Aura Pro X2, I asked them there, without explanation, there is simply no support, so I created a topic, maybe there is a person who knows.
Thanks again, 90% of the links on this topic I found on your forum!
