Hi @jtphilly ,

Is the evaporator unit getting icy cold? Is the compressor running constantly trying to drive down the temperatures?

If the answers to the above are no and yes then there may be a problem with the sealed system.

A blockage in the sealed system, a lack of refrigerant or a faulty compressor. Check for any oily residues below the compressor or on the condenser coils. There is a special lubricating oil mixed in with the refrigerant to lubricate the compressor and if there is a leak in the sealed system, the refrigerant gas will escape to the air undetected but the oil will leave a trace.

The sealed system high and low pressure would need to be tested to find out what and where the problem is. Depending on your location you may need a licenced refrigerator repairer to do this due to the environmental regulations regarding the handling of refrigerant gases.

According to the owner manual (see p.48/105 pdf numbering) there is a manufacturer’s 5 year parts and labour warranty on the sealed system (comprising the compressor, evaporator, condenser, drier and connecting tubing) and a 10 year parts and 5 year labour warranty on the compressor itself, so it may be better to go the warranty route first if the refrigerator is not that old. Just a thought.

The evaporator unit is not icy cold and the compressor doesn't run constantly. I can hear when the compressor kicks on but at some point i can't hear it anymore. The freezer temp is at 65 will not go down.

@jtphilly

It does appear to be a sealed system problem then.

I am not a refrigerator technician but my experience is that the unit is low on charge. The cooling system goes through the refrigerator evaporator, then the "Cold Pipe", if equipped with a through-the-door ice maker and then to the freezer. If the charge is low, all the heat absorption capability is exhausted before the expanding freon reaches the freezer evaporator. Especially in the Ice Room, where the cold pipe is, because it is trying to maintain freezing temperatures to make ice. I am acquiring refrigerators for my apartment. I had a few units behave like this. I am not qualified to open the system, add Schrader valves and charge the system. One unit however, had existing Schrader valves. I believe adding a little freon to it solved the problem. Also, I think when the sealed system on at least one of the other units was opened, very little freon escaped.
