Can't get into diagnostics/force shutdown

I am not able to get my ipod into diagnostics mode, because I can't turn it off. I've tried middle+menu, middle+back and middle+play/pause. Nothing happens. The buttons themselves work. I've restored it a couple of times but it didn't help
