small crack on the chin plate is this bad? what to do

I opened my laptop this morning, noticed what I thought was a scratch in the bottom of the plate wiped it, saw that it was actually a crack. place I brought it from don’t offer accidental damage repairs anymore (it wasn’t from Apple but a tech store near where I live) what should I do?

Brother, I have the same issue did it spread? (the crack), and does the display still work?

@bruh00000 - the size of the damage makes a big difference! The glass shards can damage the displays data ribbon cables which are just under neath, so replacing the Chin is the wiser direction, more so if the dame is large. If you don't and a glass shard cuts the cable thats the end of the display! Thats a very large expense $1000 USD !!

replacing the chin is a safe thing?i isn't it risky

von

yep nothing wrong with mine after putting some tape on it. although i hardly use my mac so replacing the chin bar was never in my mind tbh, like Dan says if worried is probably the safest option

For now apply some tape over the area to control the fragments from shifting. If the area gets bigger you’ll need to get the chin plate replaced. The risk here is the fragile ribbon cables that connect the LCD panel and the T-CON board which are just behind the thin glass panel MacBook Pro 15" Touch Bar 2017 Logo - Blende am Display ersetzen

thanks. im not even sure how this happened as there wasn't even anything inside the laptop for this to happen, why is the bezel so easy to break from what I've seen it breaks from pretty much any pressure

von

@Ben Wain - all it takes is a loose staple or paperclip wedged between the uppercase and the display lid the gap between is very small!

von

@danj %#*@ only thing it could have been is my headphones that I can think of. is there a chance for this to affect my display in the future? or will I be fine with it being a separate piece.

Thanks for your help by the way I appreciate it :)

von

@Ben Wain - Sure your headphone or even the Thunderbolt / USB cable end wedged can also do it in. I've replaced a good dozen and had to replace a few display assemblies as the ribbon cables where also damaged from the glass shards and/or compression directly on the LCD panel ($$$)

Being damaged now does make it weaker and if the shards cut into the ribbon cables below it could be costly!

Apple will only replace the full display, you'll need to go to an independent Mac repair shop.

@danj hopefully the ribbon cables don't get damaged. luckily compared to others I've seen on here my crack is pretty small in comparison.

I've put some sellotape on it so hopefully any shards don't get into the ribbons.
