Random Black Screen - Computer is operative but without video output

Setup:

  • MB: ECS H61H2-MV
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-2300
  • RAM: 2x Kingston HyperX Fury HX318C10FB/8 (8GB DDR3-1866)
  • GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
  • PSU: GameMax GP-500 (500W)
  • OS: Windows 10 Pro, version 20H2, build 19042.685

———-

Problem:

Display turns black randomly. Sound continues to play but sometimes cuts off. Most of the time, the blackout lasts a few seconds and turns back on, but the rest of the time it stays off. The PC is otherwise seemingly operational. On my most recent mishap, I was on a Zoom call and my camera, headset, mouse, and keyboard were working normally.

Putting the computer into hibernation and turning it back on can solve the issue. On some occasions, however, even hibernating doesn't fix it. Restarting the computer does fix the issue - so far without fail. Putting the computer to sleep doesn't fix the problem ever.

When hybernating it and turning it on, on the times where it doesn't work, the display turns on and shows the ECS logo and the Windows icon, but nothing else upon boot completion. Instead of the login screen, a short, faint green line of pixels appears on the bottom half of the screen. Everything else is black.

———-

When does it happen?

Randomly. It's inconsistent. I can play several rounds of League of Legends, Fall Guys, Deep Rock Galactic - all at max settings - and not see the issue at all. Sometimes it does happen during a game, or when watching a YouTube video, or even when the PC is briefly idle as I'm reading a webpage.

All drivers are up to date, monitor and cables are brand new. Really no idea what it could be, and hoping it's a simple, easy fix.

Searching through the site and others I came to think this might be a RAM issue. Tried reseating both RAM cards, tweaked with CPU power management settings (active/passive), but none seem to rid my system from the issue.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. ^_^

Thanks for reading!!

Hi @silversix ,

It may be a case of eliminating things to see if you can narrow it down or to make it happen consistently

Not sure if your motherboard has it (is it Ver2.0 or Ver 3.0?) but can you try the onboard video (according to the specs the CPU has Intel HD 2000 graphics) and check if the problem occurs when using it?

At least this will eliminate the Nvidia GPU as the problem if it still occurs.

Run a memory test and check that it is OK.

Hey, @jayeff! Thank you for replying!

I will try that later today. I have a Zoom meeting in 15 minutes and the today the display has been failing as early as after the Windows logo disappears even on a fresh reboot. If I'm lucky, I get to see the login screen for three seconds before it fails. Reseating RAM didn't help this time.

Should I remove the GPU for the integrated graphics to work? The first time I experienced this issue I moved the HDMI from the GPU to the one on the mobo and I still got no image.

EDIT: 20 minutes into GPU-less usage, and there was a hiccup already. Screen went black for two seconds while I was watching a YouTube video. The "device plugged in" sound played over the still playing video, and the screen turned back on. Will report later after continued usage.

Try getting into the BIOS on startup and let it stay there for a while and check if it still happens.

If not it is more a software problem.

Try starting the PC in safe mode (check online for "(insert Win OS e.g. Win 7 , 8.1, 10) safe mode" for how to do this.

If it doesn't happen in safe mode it is a driver problem or a 3rd party program problem e.g. A/V program -anti virus program perhaps.

Check what programs are loaded at startup in Task Manager > Startup

If it also happens in BIOS menus and safe mode then it is hardware problem

While playing around in BIOS, the screen was using its built in graphics. No black screens. All of yesterday I was using it GPU-less and nothing happened. I put the GPU back in this morning, updated the drivers (my card was actually EVGA and got the drivers directly from them this time rather than Nvidia) - noticed my drivers were out of date - and have been playing games, watching vids, attending meetings... and have yet to see the issue. The PC behaved similarly when I first assembled it, even though they were gifts from a friend who was experiencing this same issue, so this isn't new.

Also, I tried to create a bootable USB with memtest86 but it didn't work. Tried with two separate drives but they won't boot.

Will try Safe Mode. Startup was also checked and tweaked. Will report back once I do more testing. :)

Thanks again for the help!!!

You may have to enable "Legacy USB" in BIOS so that it will boot from a USB. Don't forget to change it back when finished.

Also it may be that the drivers were the problem. You may get it working and then there may be a Windows update that comes along and it might cause problems. It sometimes happens with updates.

At least you now know that if it doesn't happen in BIOS it is a software problem as long as you have the GPU card removed and are using the onboard video

Okay, a few days have gone by and I'd best report what's been happening:

Black screen issues have returned. Two and a half days of moderate, continuous use without issues, only for them to start happening more frequently. I thought perhaps removing the card, uninstalling its drivers, replacing it, and reinstalling the drivers would buy me time by somehow temporarily fixing the problem, but it's no good. It's too random. Sometimes I can get hours of uninterrupted gaming, but sometimes it goes black at the mere login screen. The latter being the most common outcome as of today. The problem has escalated, though. Windows won't even boot from time to time.

I couldn't try safe mode as I can barely log into Windows now. I'll set it up to boot into SM and then insert the card back in.

None of these problems occur when using the mobo's integrated GPU. So... it could boil down to one of two culprits: PSU or GPU. What are your thoughts?

EDIT: Legacy USB was enabled. Disabling it causes the system to not even recognize the drive when booting. And the drive itself isn't the problem since I was able to boot memtest from that same drive on two laptops. My desktop just won't start memtest.

EDIT 2: System apparently does not support UEFI and that' s why memtest won't boot. An older version is necessary to do so and I just downloaded it. Will edit further with results.

EDIT 3: memtest86 passed with no errors. RAM is fine. Just downloaded OCCT and will, if GPU allows, see if I can get any results.

EDIT 4: Safe mode is no good. Black screen after a couple of minutes, regardless of whether I enter into SM or stay in the troubleshooting menu.
