iMac won't boot, no chime, black screen

So I had a mid 2007 iMac with 2.0Ghz core 2 Duo CPU, and it was really slow, so I upgraded the RAM, CPU, Wlan card, and also to an SSD around 70 bucks.

It performed really well in MacOS Catalina, and I realized, that I did not plug in the mic’s cable into the motherboard. Went back, took apart the whole machine again, and assembled just as a new. Now it won’t boot. I can’t hear the startup chime, and the lcd is also off. The first 3 diagnostic leds always turn on when the machine starts.

I’ve already tried SMC reset, PRAM reset (bluetooth, usb keyboards not working), switching ram modules (it won’t beep if it doesn’t have any), also tried the old HDD, issue still remains. I had even tought about baking the logic board and GPU, but I don’t think any of them are faulty just bc of a reassembly. Do you know how can I fix that?

Ist dies eine gute Frage?

Technically, you system can only go to OS-X El Capitan (10.11.6) While there is software which will allow to run macOS Catalina (10.15.x)

While this is possible its not really something I would run on a system of this age as the systems RAM is quite limited! - 6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple).

The bottomline here is you likely did your system in as it has to work much harder with its limited resources. Your logic board support chips likely died.

You also have a second issue in this series as the electrolytic capacitors may have failed due to Capacitor Plague.

I have seen both issues, dammed and double dammed!

Thanks for the reply, I tried baking the motharboard and the GPU, and now even the 1st led wouldn't turn on, it seems that now the logic board is completely ruined. Sadly it's my mom's mac, and she just purchased a new keyboard for it. I can't afford spending more on it, but I have to get it work. Do you have any suggestion? I live in Hungary, and it's hard to find this mac, even more a salvaged one.

Last thing: why didn't it turn on? Is it a common thing when reassembling a Mac? Because I forgot to plug in the mic into the motherboard, and after doing that it was ruined. I know it's an almost 14 years old machine, but I want to get it work.

Just like a car which piston arm snapped damaging the engine block you can't fix, it you need to replace the engine ;-{

Sorry, I have no magic here. Your best option is to find someone with deeper skills and access to the needed parts. This will require a fair amount of money to fix.

@danj Hey again! Thanks for the previous answers!

I've ordered, and replaced the logic board, and the issue still remains, only 3 leds glow up just as before, and there is no chime, and the lcd doesn't turn on neither. The PSU is working well, all the fans, and the dvd spin up. I've even checked it with a Multimeter, and it seems functional.

So I think it could be the LCD cable, but I'm just not sure, because the GPU could be still faulty if the 3rd led lights up, or couldn't it be? I'm confused and a little bit dissapointed in Apple that a machine can broke just from taking it apart... (I have never gaming pcs and a laptop, and none of them had any issues after a dissasembly. The case is, my mom won't let this iMac go, somehow she won't let me dispose of it, so I must fix it someway, please help)

@boldiusama - Did you transfer the CPU over or did the replacement board come with its own CPU?

Also are you using the correct OS for this system?

von

@danj Yes, the CPU has been installed into this new motherboard. About the OS, last time it ran with Catalina, but after a teardown it wouldn't boot, nor from the El capitan drive.
