How can I partition my hard drive?

I have a 800Mhz, 256MB Mac OS 10.4.11 iBook G4. I want to split my 30GB hard drive in two, a 27GB block and a 3GB block. How can I do this? Do I use Disk Utility or is there some freeware that partitions hard drives?

Once I have the 3GB section I plan to restore it with Ubuntu 6.10, I have tried the install function within the Ubuntu OS but I get stuck at step 5/6, it asks me where I want my mount points for "/" and "swap" to be but no matter what I select, I cannot progress to step 6/6.

If anyone has a solution within Ubuntu I will try those first, then partitioning outside of Ubuntu.

I think you need to have a partition just for swap, as well as for your root directory.

My other answer is incorrect because Boot Camp is 10.5. I guess I would use a Copy of Carbon Copy Cloner and clone my Drive to a firewire drive, then use the Disk Utility to partition the Drive and Clone it back onto my Laptop..

I would use Boot Camp to Partition Your Hard Drive...If your using 10.4 it should be in the Utilities folder that resides in your Application Folder.. As a suggestion.. I would update your 30 GB drive to something a bit more substantial.

3GB may be too small for the OS and VMEM/Swapp files (I know there's minimums for certain OS's but can't remember what they are off hand, a search would trun them up)- could you split that a bit larger?

The minimum is 2.25GB

My experience with Ubuntu is that it requires more than 3GB of hard drive and it also needs a swap drive. You can use the Disc Utility to partition, but this will wipe what is on the hard drive. Boot camp might be used without loss of data.
