Ipad 8 not charging after screen replacement, though port still works

Hello! I’m a bit stuck with this one:

I recently did a screen/digitizer replacement on an iPad 8. While tricky, I managed to get everything neatly reattached and reassembled. The only uncertainty I had with this repair was disconnecting the battery, the only method I found online was to slip a non-conductive card of some sort (i used a plastic sheet) in between the battery connector and battery to sever the connection (since there is no other way to disconnect it without removing the battery)

Anyway, iPad booted back up and everything worked as it should, until I went to charge it. Upon connecting a lightning cable, there is no charging indicator and the battery symbol is still red.

However:

  • When turned off, plugging the ipad into a charger turns the ipad on
  • When plugged into a computer, it recognizes the iPad.

Any idea as to what happened here, and how I go about fixing it? my only guess is to disassemble it again, completely remove the battery and fully separate the connection, then reassemble.

Thanks

Ive had this issue on the old Air 2. The way we fix this is by reinstalling iPadOS on there. If you can get the device into DFU and do a full reinstall that may help.

Apple just released an update for most of their products. If you go into recovery, try to update it and see what happens.

Do you have any way of reading the power draw while plugged in?

I actually ended up just stripping it down again, undoing and redoing the battery connection and it starting working again. My guess is some pins on the connector weren't aligned, but in research I found that they're really easily breakable when you try to sever power.

Thanks for the answer though!

I had this same issue with a 9th Gen. Having used a piece of playing card as a battery blocker, some of the laminate on the card had rubbed off on the connector. A clean with some isopropanol sorted it.

Hi,

Yes the same thing happened to me when I recently did an Lcd & Touch glass replacement on an iPad 9.

After connecting the touch glass and Lcd I tested operation of lcd and touch glass, then pulled my isolator & then plugged in the lightning cable to test power and the same thing happened (no charge)

I thought about it for a moment and then realised I forgot the screw that clamped the battery connector down.

As soon as I replaced that screw and re tested with lightning cable the battery was charging again.

You may have replaced the screw but perhaps not tight enough as there is a little bit of flexing going on when you push a battery isolator into the connector.

Hopefully you haven’t bent the connector with the tool you made up, that would be a long job to remove main board & replace the connector.

Hope this helps
