24" iMac 7.1 (mid-2007) CPU upgrade to Intel Core 2 Extreme X9000

Hello,

Has anybody tried a CPU upgrade to Intel Core 2 Extreme X9000 S-Spec SLAZ3 on a iMac Intel 24" (mid-2007) mounting CPU X7900 and running OS X El Captain?

Thanks,

Marco

Hi Marco, I have also the same Imac, but with the original core 2 processor (XT7200).

In addition at the processor, whath others components you had to upgrade ?

Now I have OS X El Capitain but I would like to install OS Sierra for more compatibility with some software..

@vitofrag - The best your system can support is the X7900 CPU (32bit externally).

Lets look deeper at the differences between what Apple used and what you are trying to install:

Sadly these are based on different CPU constructs Merom Vs Penryn so its iffy if the older x7900 microcode will work on the newer X9000 CPU.

Apple offered the iMac7,1 series logic board in both 20" & 24" versions. The 2.8 GHz Core 2 Extreme (X7900) CPU is just one configuration 24" iMac 2.8 GHz Core 2 Extreme.

So if you have one of the other iMac7,1 24" systems then you could swap out the CPU to the X7900 for sure! I don't think there's enough benefit jumping to the X9000. In any case OS-X El Captain (10.11.x) is as high as you can go per Apple.

Thanks Dan for your reply. I guess I've been misunderstood... My iMac already has the X7900, but I'm thinking to swap it out to the X9000 to, let's say, go higher than I can go per Apple :)

Someone succeeded in upgrading to T9500... I will do the same unless someone confirms the trick works with a X9000 as well.

It's not a matter of performance improvement, I'd do it to install newer os versions.

Sadly, the systems EFI (BIOS) won't let you go any higher. Your systems firmware is still 32bit whereas the newer systems are 64bit. That limits what you can run for an macOS version.

Also this chip is also a Penryn series: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T9500

Todays Apps need much more power and RAM/stroage than what this series can offer. I would look for a uses i5/i7 based iMac if you want to get something that can offer you a higher version of macOS and/or what more performance, RAM or storage.
