SATA ODD connectors used for HDD/SSD

Hi everyone,

Can I use SATA on board for Optical drives for HDD/SSD ? And it’s same speed (SATA3) like on HDD connectors?

Thanks a lot.

Update (05/13/2022)

@oldturkey03 no I know that PATA and SATA are totally different, but on my board are two SATA connections ODD_SATA (Optical Disc Drive?) how you can see on attached picture (blue IDE , red SATA). So my question is, can I connect HDD/SDD on this two connectors ?

  1. Not sure if someone still using CD/DVD :)
  2. Need more space :)

The onboard SATA ports in this older series is SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) which requires a SATA II drive, most SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) won't run correctly if you use one on these ports.

Installing a PCI board which offers SATA III ports would be a better direction if you need SATA III ports.

von

I was thinking about that but all PCIe are currently used.

@roboscrap - Then your only option is to install larger drives for your available ports hopefully SATA III.

If you are thinking SSD then going with a Samsung EVO/PRO drive will work as its one of the few drives that auto sense the systems SATA I/O and matches to it! So it will work on your SATA II ports.

@danj all SATA ports are SATA II / SATA3GBs and it's look like this will work (on ODD SATA connections). but thanks anyway :)

@roboscrap your optical drive should actually be a Parallel ATA (PATA), originally AT Attachment, also known as ATA or IDE interface. It maxed out at 133MB/s. It will not have the speed that your SATA 3 drives have. Not compatible interfaces (connections). Let us know the exact year for your Mac Pro

Update (05/13/2022)

Yes you can use those ports. Remember that the 2006 - 2012 Mac Pros never saw internal SATA3 so you are tight to that speed on those connections

@oldturkey03 you are right, my Mac have originally PATA ( I didn’t see this for decade :D ) so what you saying is that the PATA and SATA connectors using same chip ? And both have 133mb/s ?

von

@roboscrap no what I was saying is that the IDE interface maxed out at 133MB/s whereas the SATA 3 is at 6GB/s. Those are different interfaces and they are NOT compatible, sorry about confusing you ;-)

von

@oldturkey03 thanks a lot, I mean SATA3 = SATA3GB not SATA III :)

von

@roboscrap :-) got it. Yes, those are all SATA 2 :-))
