Blows 30 amp fuse while trying to crank engine

I have a craftsman zero turn mower model number 247204111 that blows 30 amp fuse while trying to crank engine. I’ve traced entire wire harness and found no frail wires other than connector to electric clutch. Repaired connector and still doesn’t crank. I’ve also replaced battery, new ignition switch, and starter solenoid. Could electric clutch be bad and blow fuse? Need help thanks

  1. Does engine turn at all when you engage the starter?
  2. Does the starter make any sounds that indicate it is trying to power up?
  3. Have you attempted to turn the engine over by hand to see if the engine will turn over? If there are mechanical problems with the engine it might be seized or something perhaps.
  4. To address the only real question you asked, no the electric PTO (blade clutch) on mowers these days have so many interlocks on them these days it is very unlikely that is the problem. Typically riding mowers have a seat switch and a parking brake switch that must both be in correct position to enable the mowing clutch to be energized.

Yes engine is good. I purchased this mower from an individual who had ignition switch and pto switch jumped. He said ignition switch was bad and all I had to do was replace ignition switch and it would be good to go. Well changed switch now engine doesn’t crank and fuse blows when ignition switch is in crank position

Is it possible that the ignition switch you purchased was the wrong switch, or is bad? Did you confirm the part number of the switch?(925-04228) I am assuming that the switch is connected to the wiring harness by a socket type connector that you just plug the switch into. Since the mower ran previously it would seem that the problem is in the switch (it could be grounding the power that would trigger the the starter motor solenoid, and blowing the fuse), or the wire from the starter motor solenoid to the Starter motor is grounded, so when the solenoid turns on it just shorts the feed to the starter motor and blows the fuse. Look carefully at the ring connectors at each end of the wire from the solenoid to the starter motor and make sure they aren't touching any metal. Another problem could be if the starter motor is somehow jammed. One thing other to check for sure, does the fuse blow when you just turn it to the run position without trying to crank the engine?

Hi Bill, the fuse only blows when you try to crank engine. Putting switch in run position fuse is good.. I will double check connectors from solenoid and the one on starter. The ignition switch was purchased from Lowe’s, aftermarket switch, if connectors look good I’ll try another ignition switch.. I’ll keep you posted. Thanks

Hey Bill, checked all connectors seem to be all good. Replaced ignition switch with original manufacture switch, now mower doesn’t do anything. Fuse good. I can jump straight from solenoid to starter and mower starts. What’s odd is mower has to be in off position to run and I have to put key in run position to kill.. also if I engage pto engine kills. Thanks

I'm suspicious that the original owner messed with the wiring harness possibly to make jumping the various switches easier. It would not surprise me if the PTO switch now serves to ground the ignition feed to the engine. In other words (guessing because I don't have the proper schematic for your mower), it is acting like the connections have been reversed, in other words what would have been the kill position on the ignition switch (off) has been reversed by messing with the wiring harness, so that the switch could be jumped. That would explain why it will run in the off position, and perhaps also why engaging the PTO causes it to die because the PTO is acting like a kill switch, especially given that you said the PTO switch was jumped as well.
