does replacement hard drive has to be original apple product

i heard that when replacing original 'Apple hard drive' with 'other brand hard drive' you could experience wrong sensor reading so to solve that problem (overheating) you have to change original 'Apple sensor' with 'different brand' as well. what you think about it?

thanks and regards,

martin

There could be issues with some brands. I installed a Seagate ST31500341AS, 1.5TB in my system a good while back and have had no issues. I would recommend getting a USB/SATA reader. This way, when you put in the new drive and install OS/X you can connect up the old drive via USB and copy off any files or other data.

John, apparently you are unaware of Apples using proprietary firmware and seven lead temperature controler plus different sensor for different drives on the newer iMacs, read this: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/05/14/...

and this before revising your answer: http://www.macrumors.com/2011/05/12/appl...

@mayer - as always, thanks for the info. I don't think it will be long before WD, Seagate, etc, reverse engineers one of these and sells replacements. I look forward to Apple being hit with another Monopoly suit, this one I think they will sorely lose.

@mayer - just wanted to note that majsterjanek asked about a late 2009, which there should be no problem getting a Seagate replacement. Thanks for the tip on the newer iMacs.

If it is a 2009, then read the above post and a Seagate or WD drive will work fine.

As Mayer says, if it is a brand new iMac, the firmware has been changed, etc, on brand new model iMacs and you can run into issues.

Research John. Even on the 2009 note three different hard drive temperature cables: http://www.welovemacs.com/mb950lla.html

You have to go back to the 2008 machines to get away from it.
