Display won't turn on, battery indicator flashes white.

Context:
I left my laptop on overnight, and it shut itself down from low battery by the time I woke up. Perfectly normal, I've done that multiple times. Laptop worked perfectly fine before this problem occured.
-------------------------
To my dismay, when I plugged the charger in and turned the laptop back on, I was greeted with a black screen, followed by the battery indicator light blinking white 3 times, in approx 5second intervals.
I thought it had been the battery not charging, but when I turned the laptop off, the battery indicator glowed orange, indicating that it was in fact charging like normal.

I've disconnected the battery by opening the laptop up, held the power button for 30 seconds, thinking the problem was static in the components, but that too did nothing.
I did notice a bit later however, that all the fans and internal components sounded like they were running.
Finally, I tried hooking the laptop up to an external display. As I suspected, it worked.
No signs of the original laptop display being detected, though. I was wondering if I could get the original laptop display working again.

I'd appreciate if anybody could diagnose the problem, and help me with a fix, if any. Cheers!

Hi,

Check the status of the display adapters in Device Manager to make sure that they're both OK.

With the laptop turned on try shining a flashlight at an angle close to the laptop's display and check any images on the screen. They will be very faint if they are there so trying in a darkened room may help to see them.

If you can see images then there's a backlight problem with the screen

von

Heya, thanks for commenting!

Nothing looked abnormal when I looked into both display adapters, all up to date, etc. Even checking into the Nvidia and Intel's control panels, both of them seemed to run normally, EXCEPT for the fact that the original laptop display is non-existent/not detected.

Doesn't seem like a backlight problem either, I couldn't make out a faint image of any sort.

@Eduardus Quaasalmy

Can you get into BIOS with a display?

Usually the Intel GPU is used for BIOS and then depending on the settings in the OS either the Intel or the Nvidia are used.

von

@jayeff

Nope, everything from the startup logo, post, etc. isn't visible.

Could you perhaps walk me through how I'd be able to access BIOS via the external display?

von

@Eduardus Quaasalmy

What is the status of the "Monitor" in Device manager? Hopefully it will show two, the external and the internal

You could try getting into BIOS via Windows

There is no separate CMOS battery connected to the motherboard in your model laptop.

The CMOS battery function is incorporated in the main battery.

You can try to reset the BIOS by disconnecting the main battery from the motherboard (you don't have to remove the battery, just disconnect it) and then press and hold the power on button for 30 seconds and then release it.

Then reconnect the main battery, reassemble the laptop, connect the charger and check if it turns on OK

Here's a video that may help.

The battery is seen being disconnected at 2:48 minutes into the video.

Thanks @jayeff,

Thanks for your detailed instructions.

Actually,

I have tried this but that wasn't a success. The screen was still black and the light on the battery was also blinking white.

I suspect this is because of thermal paste as I was playing game and suddenly it goes black.

Also when I opened up the back the paste was melting.

Do you think is that the reason?

Looking forward to hearing any more ideas.

von

@syedtoheed54846

Overheating may have contributed. Is the fan working OK?

Had you previously refreshed the thermal paste?

Maybe check that you didn't apply too much paste and that it has overflowed onto the CPU pins/connector causing a problem if the CPU was running hot.

Perhaps clean it off as best you can (use Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+- do this with the battery disconnected from the motherboard) and then reapply some new thermal paste. Here's the ifixit Wie trage ich Wärmeleitpaste am besten auf guide that may help.

If still no good after this then there's a motherboard problem.

von

@jayeff,

I haven't refreshed the thermal paste since I bought the laptop and that 3 years from now.

Yes, the fans are working fine.

Should I refresh the thermal paste?

von

@syedtoheed54846

No.

The laptop overheating could be due to other factors besides playing a game which certainly would have played a part.

Playing games places the hardware under stress especially if it operating at the upper limits of the hardware.

As I said it's most probably a motherboard problem. The trouble is finding out what.

Unfortunately you would need the schematics to work out what was wrong.

Ideally the laptop should have shut down before the thermal paste got to the point of melting and it became noticeable so hopefully the CPU hasn't been damaged

von

@jayeff ,

So, is there might be the thermal paste issue that it melts and goes to other parts of the laptop.

Also, do you know what are the purpose of Asus laptop to blink the battery light in white colour for 3 times every 5 secs.

I think that it might be a signal to some error and that might help.

I always like to boot from an Ubuntu USB drive just to rule out a software issue. You could try that and see what happens.

I use Linuxmint as my prime OS, and also for some diagnostic usage. try booting a live usb of any Linux flavor, and see if the screen works, properly.

I have talked with multiple IT and computer techs. We have concluded that the bios battery failed and corrupted the bios. Therefore it looks like I need to replace the MB and bios battery.

Hi @jon,

Thanks for the comment.

As mentioned, there is a white light keep blinking after every 5 sec for 3 times.

Is this Asus specific configuration to tell something.

I tried to look at this but wasn't able to find anything.

Also,if you can please provide me a related video to change the CMOS battery in Asus tuf dash f15.

Help really appreciated.

Thanks,

von

My GU501GM has a separate bios battery. Which is why I think it died

The laptop appears to be fully functional except for the display since it is working with an external display. Therefore, the battery is fine, the CMOS is fine, the paste is fine, the CPU isn't overheating and the pins are not shorting out from the paste, the backlight is not the problem since the computer doesn't even see the display, so there can be no video on it. In a dark room you may be able to see the backlight come on. I suspect, either a cable has come loose or the display is dead. It is possible there is a seperate drivers on the MB for the internal display and the external display. If so, then the problem could be on the MB.

Hi @bill,

Hope you are doing well.

Thanks for the explanation.

First of all, Can you refer what does you meant by MB.

And as you know that the laptop is keep blinking white for the battery icon every 5 sec for 3 times.

Do you know what does it mean by this for the Asus Laptops.

Thanks in advance.

von

MB = MotherBoard

I don't know what that code is - I will try to find it.

von

Can't find any Asus blink codes but the HP has them and 3 is a memory error.

If only these things were standardized.

But it is possible a display memory error could cause the problem. You may have a seperate plug in display adapter.
