Information and repair instructions for Danby Freezer

Do I have a freezer thermostat issue?

Hi everyone,

Looking for some help here. I have a Danby stand up freezer that just completely goes warm and dead on me. However if I play with the thermostat the motor kicks in. So I'm thinking it's the thermostat that needs to be changed. However i tested the thermostat for continuity and it's seem fine. Any suggestions? Can it be a defective thermostat despite having continuity?

Update (04/05/23)

I meant Tested the thermostat.

Hi @uvfvb50vflmba,

What is the model number of the freezer?

von

@jayeff The model is a Danby DUF808WE.

Did replacing the thermostat fix your issue? I'm having the same problem with the same model freezer. Have a thermostat and start relay on order.

Hi Marco,

I have the same model Danby WUF808WE, what screwdriver did you use to take the thermostat cover off with? Seems to be a special type and I can’t seem to locate one.

Cheers,

AJ

Hi @uvfvb50vflmba

Manually getting a thermostat to operate/release may be different to if it does it automatically so to speak.

By "...if I play with the thermostat the motor kicks in." you mean just tapping it then replacing the thermostat might be a good idea.

The Danby part # is 1.03.02.01.070. If you search online for Danby 1.03.02.01.070 you will get results for suppliers. Most say out of stock or no longer available, although depending on your location, I did find a Canadian supplier who has them in stock and also a US supplier who can get one by early May.

If you need more parts here's the parts list for the model.

Agreed. If messing with the thermostat gets it to start cooling again, the thermostat is failing. At this stage it is intermittent. Soon it will stop altogether. Recommend replacing tstat.

Hi @uvfvb50vflmba,

Without knowing the model number or other details. It sounds more likely a connectivity issue, unless it uses a very old thermostat that contains mercury. For example a cold or bad solder joint or frayed wire.

My Danby is about 30 years old. It stopped working until I moved the thermostat to 1 or 0. The thermostat had broken off from one of its mounting screws about an inch from the top of its mount. I have since repositioned the thermostat with rubber caulking and it has been working fine for over a week now. Does anyone know if the thermostat is probably a mercury type?

Hi @lenjeffrey,

You would have to contact the manufacturer of the thermostat to know for sure.

The type of thermostat that has a long thin tube inserted into the cabinet could have the tube filled with either a liquid or a gas.

There's a temperature sensor connected to the tube in the main body of the thermostat. Essentially the tube just relays the temperature from the compartment through to the sensor.

The sensor has a set of contacts that controls whether the compressor is turned on or off to either cool the refrigerator down or to stop cooling as it is cold enough.
