iPhone 5 goes into recovery mode on power, but not with the computer.

As stated in the title, I can get the phone (iPhone 5) into recovery mode when it is connected to power, but not when it is connected to my computer.

It will boot loop from the computer, similar to what it was originally doing when connected to power.

I have tried a few different ports, and I am about to crawl under the desk to try the back ones.

Is there any other way I could try?

(My iPhone 12 mini screen shattered, and I am trying to reboot my iPhone 5 to use in the meantime)

When I get the recovery screen up when it is connected to the power adapter, it disappears once I disconnect and reconnect to the computer.

No luck on the backside USB ports. I just tried the process from power and got success from that. Plugging the phone back into the computer from that sends it into the boot loop.

Hi Luke,

Okay, so not having any luck with recovery mode. Just to double-check, you're getting into recovery mode as follows.

From hardreset.info:

  1. Turn off completely your iPhone 5.
  2. Push Home button and hold it then connect usb cable to phone.
  3. Wait to APPLE logo like on picture after release Home button.

Since that doesn't seem to be working for you, you might try DFU mode instead. That's a lower level version of the formatting, one that does the most complete wipe of the phone possible, even more so than a restore via recovery mode.

From theiphonewiki.com:

  1. Connect the device to a computer using a USB cable.
  2. Hold down both the Home button and Lock button.
  3. After 8 seconds, release the Lock button while continuing to hold down the Home button.
    • If the Apple logo appears, the Lock button was held down for too long.
  4. Nothing will be displayed on the screen when the device is in DFU mode. If open, iTunes will alert you that a device was detected in recovery mode.
    • If your device shows a screen telling you to connect the device to iTunes, retry these steps.

Hey, Jerry!

Thanks for the comprehensive explanation on how to get into DFU mode.

However, I still have no luck. I tried the same process on my laptop that successfully ran through the recovery process for my mom's old iPhone 8, but no luck on my iPhone 5.

I tried the recovery mode process on a different power adapter (because it gives me visual feedback if it is successful), and I made it to the "recovery mode" type page. When I tried to transfer the phone to my laptop, no matter how quick, the phone died again.

The phone is almost acting like the computer isn't powering it enough to initiate a restore or DFU mode, but just enough to initiate a boot loop.

Could it be that the battery just is so unused that the computer doesn't recognize it as a battery while the power adapter can recognize it?

@lukeschmitt It is quite possible, perhaps even likely, that the battery has gone to that great recycling pile in the sky, or wherever batteries go when they die. The phone is, what, 11 years old now, and that's well beyond the expected lifetime for a lithium ion battery.

A battery that won't hold a charge could easily account for the behavior you're seeing, so it would definitely be worth your time to replace it and see if that cures its current set of ills. As it is, without being able to boot or access any of the phone's information, it's going to be fairly difficult to figure out what's going on so hopefully that'll at least calm it down.

Much appreciated, Jerry!

On the bright side, the new screen for my iPhone 12 mini comes in a few hours, so I should be good to go. If I want to have my 5 as a backup, I already have the tools out to replace things!
